We stayed at the Shinyu for one night whilst we passed through Unzen on the way from Kumamoto to Nagasaki. Actually getting to the hotel is quite a trek as you will need to drive up through the mountains to reach the onsen area. Once there, you will have no shortage of onsen hotels/ryokans to choose from. We chose the Shinyu as it was a better price than some of the other more ridiculously expensive rival hotels in the local area.
The entrance of the hotel has a typical ryokan feel and the lobby and corridor has a distinct out of date feeling, a refurbishment is badly needed. The same goes for the rooms, whilst they are quite clean the furniture is old and of low quality for a Japanese hotel. I dropped some papers behind one of the drawers and had to pull it out to retrieve it; at least five years of dust has accumulated behind - the same goes for the rooms, they all feel very dusty.
That being said there are several positives - the breakfast is great and there are many onsens to enjoy. However, this hotel badly needs an overhaul and needs to be cleaned properly.
