My wife and I (plus 2 other adult family members) recently stayed at Unzen Shinyu in March. My wife and I have been in Unzen before and we had stayed at the then Unzen Kyushu Hotel (now under redevelopment)

This ryokan, like many of the hotels and ryokans in Unzen is rather old. The interior of the hotel and rooms are well maintained, and clean, however. The settings for the onsens are quite nice, and the onsen clean as well.

Food (dinner and breakfast) is very good and so is the meal and other hotel services from the staffs.

This ryokan is well placed too, if you wish to spend some time exploring the active volcanic vents of Unzen (located barely 5-10 minutes away, by foot) - and the walk along developed footpaths around the many active volcanic vents could take 60-90 minutes. Consequently, there is a strong smell of sulfur in the air throughout the day except when the wind is blowing it away from you.

Rather old but well maintained with 4 onsen pools in basement and first floor. It has japanese style room with tatami and also western room with regular bed. Every room has yukata & haori that guess could wear during stay in hotel premises. Good set menu being served to every guess. Very helpful and polite staffs. Convinient location on the main street.

Enjoyed our stay at this onsen hotel which was located very near to Unzen Hell. There are two onsens, which were generally well maintained. The sulphur smell is strong but it didn't bother us. Meals were served in a large dining hall which was nice, and the food was good. The room was spacious and clean but showing its age. A suggestion is to change the white light in the room to a warm light to make the room more cosy. Overall, a pleasant stay.

EXECELLENT location and the staff were excellent as usual. lobby is big and clean. check in procedure was fast and greeting service was also very good. Room is 1st class n we stayed in a massive room for 6 persons. Dinner is served in a private room and very cosy. the spa is excellent and very clean. everything is perfect at this hotel and at least 4 * standard. beware the only issue is that the minerals are very strong and very muddy the spa water as it is natural and the smelliest that i have been to so far. women, you need to hold your breath. aside from that a must to stay at this hotel aslo the area is nice.
