“My personal favorite evening with my then friend and now girlfriend”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

We hired an old two wheeler which was very worn out and did not have decent brakes and and had a very peculiar way to start. We had our share of troubles with the bike. And to top it all it was pouring that day. We had to stay in Matri Mandir's coffee shop for a good couple of hours. We had an amazing Lasagne in the coffee shop. This place looks amazing in the dark and specially when it rains. Definitely worth the trip

“An out of the word experience”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

A must see place if you are visiting Pondicherry. There are bus trips organized by Aurocare that takes visitors to Auroville. At the end of the 1 KM walk from the visitor center, lies the most amazing form of architecture - called Matrimandir ... only regret was that entry to the chamber of meditation is by appointment only .. and usually has a 3/4 day wait time. Difficult to visit unless one plans to stay for a week in Pondicherry ...

“An interesting place to visit and to learn”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

The Matrimandir is a building with meditation purposes located in a place called Auroville, (30 minutes in tuc tuc from Pondicherry, u must pay between 450-500 rupees to go and to come back to Pondicherry, the driver will wait for u). Auroville is a tiny village with people from different places of the world (around 2000 people) who lives together, in harmony according with Sri Aurobindo's message (a religious leader very famous in Pondicherry) They started to build this place in the late 60's and finished around 2008, at that time the religious leader in charge was The Mother (the closest Sri Aurobindo's disciple who was in charge after her master dies).
When u arrive in Auroville u will be friendly received by the volunteers and invited to see an introductory video, this video explains why was created this place and also will explain the Matrimandir's purpose in detail. After this u will need to pick an special ticket to visit the Matrimandir (just by outside in a distance of 200 meters) and u will need to walk around 1km to arrive where the place is located. The path on Matrimandir's way is quiet and surrounded by trees, so I am sure u will enjoy the walk, once there feel free to take pictures of the building or if u want to meditate a bit coz this place is really peaceful.
If u want to visit the Matrimandir by inside u will need to book in advance in Auroville's offices (around 2 or 3 day in advance, if u don't do that is no way to get in). People says to get into it is a great experience (I didn't do it, maybe next time!).
Once u finish your visit u can take lunch in the Auroville's restaurant, this place has options for vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters with affordable prices, also u can visit the bookshop (some interesting titles) and other shops inside the complex offering pottery, papers, home made meals and clothes (this last one is extremely pricy). In general Auroville is a good option to visit, to learn and to relax.

“want to feel the core of silence, beauty and life . . .go to Matrimandir”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

Aurville is a phenomenon by itself. Its a very huge area and a place which will take atleast a week to explore but if u r hard pressed for time then just drop in for a day, visit mATRIMANDIR, have a lunch at the cafateria, buy some very exclusive souveneir and rush back.

how to go:
1)you could hire a bike in pondy (Rs 300 per day + fuel) Arya bike rental is very good and then roam as you wish - the best option if u r in pondy for a few days - but the fellow road users are a real challenge.
2) you could goto the a Aurocare - ashrams travel wing and they will arrange a to and fro to Auroville from the city 2 times a day
3) hire a cab - the most expensive option of the 3

If you have already been to Auroville then you could book your pass to meditate inside the matrimandir by contacting the Auroville by 10 am to 11 am the previous day and book your slot else you could visit the outside of the mandir and enjoy some time in the pristine forests of Auroville.

Never miss a chance to drop in and sink your teeth into some nice bakers items at Auroville bakery (on the way to Auroville).

Matrimandir is beautiful, unfortunately we could not enter as it was closed. Took some pictures from distance and it looks beautiful. Carry water with you as it is a good walk from the entrance and vehicles are not allowed.
