We travelled to Austria from Italy with Newmarket and upon arriving David (very nice rep) told us that all but 7 of us were in the sister hotel up the road which I wasn't happy with at all as had read reviews about this. I'm putting this review under the Edelweiss although we didn't actually stay in that hotel as this is the hotel were we booked to and if you are going on this Newmarket holiday you will be expecting to go to this hotel.
However, we had a very large room, two bedrooms, large balcony with a view of snow capped mountains which was fab. Therefore just ignored the dated decor and carpets on the floor. We ate in this hotel and the people in the Edelweiss which is just up the road came to our hotel to eat presumably as the bulk of us were in this hotel - think it was called the Club Hotel (?). The restaurant was much better than the Geier in Italy and food was better but not brilliant. Better variety of salad, usually clear soup to start so I made up for it with the salad, the main meal - pork in pepper sauce was the best meal I had in this hotel. There was a pool and sauna in the hotel and all staff really nice.
Some lovely walks if you are not doing the trips. Don't pay to go on trip to Innsbrook, get the bus and go yourself. We went up the mountain in the cable car and sat on deck chairs in the snow in t-shirts and sunglasses, amazing. There is a lovely walk, just up behind the shoe shop in Gotzens - you won't miss it because there is hardly anything in Gotzens. Walked through beautiful villages and fields, everyone so friendly. Also a walk up past the supermarket, went through the fields and woods. Very lucky with the weather as had been dreadful before we got there, terrible floods in Austria but luckily not in Gotzens. There is a pub in the village - 1 pub - and not much else. I wouldn't really want to spend a week there. The church is worth a look at and the supermarket was good. Wine very reasonable!
All in all had a really enjoyable holiday but if the weather had not been good I don't know what we'd have done as other than one pub, no cafe's etc. Having been to Austria last year, independently wouldn't choose Gotzens as a resort as there are much better places but the scenery wherever you go in Austria is stunning.
