“disappointing”
Reviewed November 23, 2012 via mobile

Went with my hubby and friends and this was our second visit after wanting to return after a good time was had about a year ago. Nice pub with lots of character and a great looking and reasonably priced menu.

Sat just inside the main entrance and waited about 5 minutes for some attention which didnt come so had to go and find someone to take our drinks order. I was in fish and chip mode so ordered the cod but the waitress suggested the haddock was a better choice as it was a bigger portion and the chips were normal ones rather than bigger steak type ones. Not wanting to go against a staff recommendation three of us chose the haddock. The chips werent normal they were the frozen type and for a pub like this I wasnt expecting that. We got a shock when we started to eat the fish as it was pink in colour and resembled salmon although a bit paler. It tasted great and so I wasnt too bothered but I did make a mention about the color to the waitress when she came to ask if all was ok. She just laughed about the color and walked away. Anyway we finished our meal and didnt get any bad effects from eating it but I really don’t know what to make of it all, pink haddock!

Anyway I dont think we will be going again.

“go early or regret it!”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

The many bad reviews seem to focus on rude staff and a long wait. Having visited the Kings Head for lunch for several years, it does seem to get busy very quickly, and there is a big difference in service speed if you are there early rather than late. Our lunch visit today: would not describe staff as 'rude', though a bit going through the 'been trained how to be pleasant, rather than genuinely am pleasant' type. There has been a change of menu (for the better) over the last year or so, and what we had was beautifully presented and 'good' in quality, better than many similar places, not a 'wow' though, yet reasonably priced. This place scores very highly for atmosphere, as it has just the right lighting level on a dour day to feel cosy (ie none of the harsh bright lighting which has lamentably invaded most such places hereabouts), plus nice roaring fires, and I like the fact that newspapers are provided. On the other hand, given the largely middle-aged clientele, couldn't the background music be better and more appropriate? Chart-style pop music so does not fit!!!

“I WILL NOT BE RETURNING”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

We booked a table of 10 for out mothers 80th birthday, we choose it because they have a fabulous menu with somethine for everyone also the website for the restuarant looked really homely and inviting. When we arrived we were amazed at how they had but two tables together to accomodate a part of 10, the tables didn;t match one of the tables was about 10 inches in depth not length smaller than the other, with seats put either sides of the joint between the two tables which meant whoever sat in each of these places there places would not fit on. When we spoke to the waitress she was rude and really unhelpful and said that is the only way theycan manage to sit ten people together and when I asked if we could at least have two tables that are the same size her reply was again thats how all our tables are - different sizes. SO IF YOUR ARE A PART OF 10 OR MORE DEFINATELY AVOID THIS RESTUARANT.

When we eventually all sat down after moving the seating to enable everyone to sit comfortably we waited a good 10 minutes before they came back to ask for our drink order, and I would like to say that the waitress that we had for the rest of the night was a lovely lady who was friendly and very conscientious.

Everyone in in our party seemed to enjoy there food, except I would suggest you avoid the Lamb Shank as it wasn't cooked enough it was as tough as old boots and certainly didn't fall of the bone as it should, infact I couldn;t even get my knife through it to get any off.

Very disappointed as it was a special occasion not everyday you can celebrate an 80th birthday, certainly would not recommend it.

“Rude and wont be returning”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

I booked a table for 8 people for sunday lunch at 1. This was booked and confirmed the previous friday.

We arrived at the restaurant and there appeared to be a problem over the seating and with the booking. After being asked the name of the table twice we were shown to our seats and immediately told loudly and rudely that
' you have to be gone by 3 though becuase this table is booked for someone else'.

This immediately got my back up having been recommended this restaurant and choosing this location for 8 people for a birthday.
Whilst this gave us 2 hours we felt like this was a totally unnacceptable way to seat someone and furthermore it was upsetting as this was a special occasion that had been prebooked!

We opted against starters as we were now very aware that there was a time limit on our seats and so we order mains straight away. This came up an hour later. We had deserts and again waited for 20 mins for these. It was approaching 3 and the staff made it very aware that we needed to be gone and were hanging around clearing our table as we were still eating. The other party were informed that they were waiting for us to finish and then proceeded to moan very loudly about this.

Im am deeply disappointed - not just with the whole booking system, but the way this was dealt with and then the excuse given to the other party waiting for our seats. Under no circumstances will I be eating here again- let alone booking for a table of 8.

Rude, dismissive and a total disappointment.

“Not up to previous standard”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

Arrived 6pm, acknowledged straight away, but waited five minutes to be seated and order soft drinks, even though fairly quiet. Waited further 15 minutes for drinks and for order to be taken. By 7 pm asked where meal was as we had been there for 1 hour, at least two tables who came in after us had had their food a while, it then arrived. Manager informed us we had only been waiting forty minutes! So much for customer service. Waiter very polite and hard working. Offered complimentary drinks, but did not want to wait any longer. Will not be going to my local again.
