“Unforgettable stay”
Reviewed June 15, 2013

We stayed in room 401 which I believe was described as having a view of the tori gate, and we could see it but I thought it was a little obscured by some trees. The nearby pagoda was more visible and made for a nice view from the room. This room also included its own onsen on the balcony which was nice.

Service was impeccable: front desk staff escorted us to our room upon check in and prepared tea for us. There is green tea in the fridge in the room free of charge. A pitcher of cold water is also in the fridge.

When I am on vacation, I can be quite lazy. Even though they may have a coffee maker and all the fixings in the room, I almost always just wait until we go to breakfast for coffee because 1) preparing it in the room seems like too much trouble and 2) liquid creamer is almost never supplied, just the powder kind. Well, the Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto does it right! The electric kettle is already prepped; full of water. All you have to do is flip the switch to turn it on. They supply you with Noritake cups to drink out of and liquid creamer.

The room was spacious and quiet and on Sunday nights they have a concert. They have a karaoke room, but we didn't visit it. Also, we were brought a midday snack in our room of fruit cocktail and tea. I wasn't expecting that.

This hotel is completely amazing! We had a Japanese-style room with a private outdoor bath. The room was massive, more like a suite. We also had incredible views from several windows and the balcony. The staff were really helpful and friendly.
We also had dinner and breakfast included. Both meals were fantastic but dinner was especially memorable. We had a private Japanese-style dining room (although we had a Western-style table) and dinner was 14 courses.
There are also public baths in the hotel. There are indoor and outdoor baths and they are both really nice, although at night the outdoor bath is particularly good.
We loved staying here and couldn't recommend it more highly - it is wonderful!

Room Tip: The Japanese-style rooms with private outdoor baths are the most expensive rooms in the hotel but co...

Clean, lovely view (we paid extra) of the o-torii, and good service. Very accommodating to non-Japanese travelers. Would definitely stay there again. The Japanese breakfast was a better choice for me.

We booked the Miyajima Grand online and the room available at the time was a standard Japanese/Western room with dinner & breakfast for two for 37,800 yen inc service charge and taxes, which we thought was reasonable value. We were a little confused about what the hotel actually looked like as the Itsukushima Shrine featured quite prominently on their website. We'd originally booked two nights at the Sheraton in Hiroshima and were going to make Miyajima a day trip but from advice, and what we had read we decided that we had to stay the night on Miyajima to fully appreciate what it had to offer and we were really pleased we made that decision! Getting to Miyajima is quite simple and if you have a JR pass then it's from Track 1 at Hiroshima on the JR Sanyo Line - 30 minutes to Miyajimaguchi then another 10 minutes on the JR Ferry. There's also a tram that runs from outside Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi that goes past the Atomic Dome. We called the hotel on our mobile when we embarked on the ferry and they sent their bus to meet us at the terminal on the other side. The trip to the hotel on the bus is steep and windy and takes a few minutes but, in reality, the hotel is just a few minutes walk from both the amazing O-torii Gate and Itsukushima Shrine. On arrival at the "back door" the hotel seems a little stark with its grey concrete construction but once inside things warm up considerably. Our standard room was a good size with split Japanese/Western personality but it all worked rather well. We chose the comfortable beds rather than having the futon rolled out on the tatami mats! There was a reasonable view out of the window, green tea on arrival, a nice sitting area, a good briefing on the hotel's facilities and a run-through of that evening's menu. The bathroom was good and functional but nothing spectacular. We spent the afternoon visiting the shrine and walking out at low tide to the massive O-torii gate. Miyajima is one of Japan's biggest tourist attractions and you'll know it if you only choose to visit the island as a day tripper when the place is swamped with tour groups. Late in the day and after dark the place takes on a whole new persona. Seeing the O-torii gate in daylight and at low tide is one thing but seeing it lit up at night "floating" on a high tide with what seems a handful of other on-lookers is quite something else! Dinner at the Miyajima Grand was an excellent multi-course Japanese affair and was creatively presented. The staff seem young but are very keen and courteous and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We slept really well and enjoyed our choice of a western breakfast. Check-out was simple and our luggage was loaded onto the hotel bus for the short trip to the ferry. An excellent stay where we could enjoy the best of Miyajima far from the madding crowd.

From the moment we arrived we knew our stay was going to be special. Miyajima is a beautiful island and the Grand Arimoto made it extra special.

Upgraded to a room with a private outdoor bath was a fabulous touch to our Japanese room. A few minutes walk to the key sights made seeing the torii at different times of day really easy. The dinner and breakfast were amazing. Beautifully presented.

So relaxing to put on a yukata and then be ready to eat, bathe and relax for the duration of the stay.

Such a special stay and one we will treasure for a long time.

The Miyajima Grand Hotel and its environs offer the essence of Japan. The hotel itself provides accomodations and dining to satisfy those desiring the complete Japanese experience. The hotel is located on Itsukushima Shrine bay with excellent views of the shrine. The island itself is criss-crossed by scenic walking trails enabling one to enjoy the deer and the pines. However, the most important feature of the hotel is its proximity to the Itsukushima Shrine itself. A short walk from the hotel one meets striking views of the Gate and shrine buildings.

The hotel is reached by ferry, either automobile or passenger. The hotel bus will pick up arriving passengers by prearrangement.

Room Tip: Ask for a room high on the shrine side for an excellent view.
