The gondalas travel slowly and the views are great. We walked up to the top but there was building work on the visitor centre being done. There are views of the inland sea at the other side of the island from the top.

I visited out of necessity (a grabbed opportunity between meetings in Tokyo in adjacent weeks) in early February, but even though relatively cool (for me a winter jacket was needed at times), the skies were clear and a perfect time to explore the park.

If like me, you only have a weekend in the area and are staying in Hiroshima- I would highly recommend the day-day ¥2,000 pass from the tram vending machines (to the left as you exit the main entrance to Hiroshima Station), even if you travel to Miyakima and the park for one day.

A return ticked on the "ropeway" (= two sets of cable car) costs ¥1,800 alone, and the two-day pass also included unlimited rides on the trams and the ferry to Miyajima).

(I didn't have a JR Pass, and so I opted to take the tram from Hiroshima to the ferry terminal - which was scenic but slow ... and then take the faster JR train on the way back)

However, having saved time, make sure you spend time to explore the summit and take in the fabulous views of the bay.

Highly recommended, and worth the long train trip from Tokyo for the weekend.

Travel on the ropeway up to Shishiwa Station. Here you can light the "Fire of Oath" together (free) and book in for the hands on experience of making Momiji Manju Cakes. A steep walk up to the "Kiezu-no-hi" (the external flame) which has been burning for 1200years and was the pilot light for the "Flame of Pleace" of Hiroshima Peace Memorial park. Continue up to the summit of Mt Mison (Altitude 535m) which represents the genuine value of Miyaijima, one of the three most scenic spots of Japan. Walk back down on the Misen Path (Daisho-in Course )approx 1.5hrs passing the Daisho-In Temple which is worth a walk thru.

climbed this in January, and it got progressively warmer as we approached the top - stripped down to just two layers and was tempted to just wear my tank top when we were at the summit. We took the Momijidani route, which is the most direct but also the steepest route. Some of the steep stairs were a bit challenging as my legs are not what you'd call long. However, I come from a country where there are no lovely forests and hills to hike through, and so this was a treat for a nature-lover. Note that there are no bathroom facilities till you reach the top though. The views from the top are lovely - on a clear day there are beautiful, sweeping views of the inland sea off Hiroshima. The observatory at the top is worn down, though and initially I thought it might be a little rickety. Turned out okay though. The top of Mt. Misen has some interesting little temples and shrines, and a whole bunch of rocks. You can also take the ropeway up and walk about 30 minutes to the summit. There are wild deer at the top and as long as you don't touch or feed them you'll be fine. If you're on Miyajima island, I'd recommend climbing it as it's a great way to experience the great outdoors in Japan.

Great view from the top, we climbed in December -thus cold but warmed up as it was not a short climb (2-3 hours total). You can use cable car but need to climb up afterwards to the top. The restaurant and view tower is not well maintained though. It's a good way to enjoy whole Miyajima to do a hike.
