I know this is a very late review, but better late than never. Watanabe Inn on Miyajima Island had to be the highlight of our 11 night trip to Japan in December 2010. The Inn has only 3 rooms and we stayed in " Shiraito" which is the biggest room. The room was amazing and huge with a small veranda where you could sit and enjoy the view over Miyajima. The cypress bath in the room was very relaxing and my husband didn't want to get out .We couldn't be happier with this lovely Inn. Beautiful family run and great food prepared for both dinner and breakfast. And you just couldn't ask for more regarding service. We had dinner in a private room, since we were the last guests to stay for 2010. It was pretty special as we had the whole place to ourselves. We were sad to leave this place as I can’t describe how peaceful it was as we had spent some time in Tokyo and Kyoto as well as travelling at a fast pace prior to visiting Miyajima Island. It wasn't till reaching the ryokan that we enjoyed absolute relaxation and bliss. If you are planning to stay the night on Miyajima Island, trust me, you won't be disappointed with Wantanabe Inn.

We stayed at Auberge Watanabe for two nights in October and it was one of the highlights of our 16 day trip to Japan. Staying on the island really does give you the chance to experience it without the crowds - it's surprisingly calm come 6:00pm every day! The hosts were great and very patient with the time we took over the truly delicious and plentiful food. They also spoke great English (despite their declarations to the contrary!).

The Momaji room was huge and the cypress bath very welcome after a day of walking. What's more, they can pick you up and drop you off at the ferry terminal for no extra charge - just ask at the terminal's help desk, and they'll give them a call. This is worth doing, as the only other alternative is to walk up with your luggage.

If you're looking to enjoy the superior hospitality and food that a ryokan offers in beautiful surroundings, you can't go wrong with this little gem.

The only negative aspect was that we had only two nights here – hope we can return some day for a longer stay. Miyajima Island is a lovely place to spend some time, especially after the tour groups leave at night. We had “Momiji” room, which was very comfortable, with a sitting room, bedroom (where the futon beds magically appeared while we were having dinner), and a small verandah. The delightful cedar bathroom is separate from the toilet room, and everything is very clean. In contrast to another stopover, where we didn’t sleep well on the futon style beds, the futon beds here were comfortable and we slept well. There were the low Japanese style chairs (with backs) in the living room, but also two western style chairs on the verandah. For older people like us this was a blessing, as it can be difficult doing everything at floor level when you are unaccustomed to it. The meals were beyond delicious, and looked as good as they tasted. We were served a different menu each night, and also in the morning. Our hosts picked us up at the ferry terminal when we arrived, and dropped us off when we left. Again this was a blessing, as the walk (a very pleasant one) would be more difficult with luggage. (We used the bag forwarding service throughout this trip to Japan and it worked excellently. When you are travelling by train it is good not to be encumbered with luggage as it isn’t always easy to locate escalators or elevators in stations.) Our hosts were so pleasant, and this is another reason why this is such a wonderful place to stay. It was helpful also that they spoke English.
We arrived in Hiroshima by train (from Kanazawa), and changed to the local commuter train to Miyajimaguchi, where we caught the ferry to the island. We also tried the hydrofoil service (one way) when we did a day trip into Hiroshima. It drops you off right at the Peace Park, but is much more expensive than the train/ferry combo, and not much faster as they have to travel slowly, once on the river instead of the open sea.
Certainly hope to return again to Miyajima and Watanabe Inn, which was our favourite stop on our Japanese trip.

One of the very best, very helpful, great room, great location. For this quality a great price too.
I particularly appreciated the temperature controlled soaking tub in our private bathroom. I would strongly recommend Watanabe Inn for those who are looking for the real ryokan experience.

The Auberge Watanabe (or the Watanabe Inn) is a family run traditional Ryokan coupled with a restaurant nestled against Momijidani Park. The location, accommodation, food and welcome that we got here, coupled with the beautiful island itself, made for one of the most magical travels we have ever had.

There are only 3 rooms in the hotel and we stayed in the mid-sized one. The room was large, clean and decorated beautifully, with a tea area looking onto the hotel's small garden and koi. Just beyond the garden were the autumn leaves of Momijidani park, a temple, the climbing path up Mount Misen and a babbling brook. The cypress bath in the room was amazing. The hotel is in a quiet area about 5 minutes walk from the Torii Gate and the Shrine. This corner of the island was more wild and less developed than other parts of the island, less houses and more parks, temples and shrines.

The owners attend to everything and were very warm and attentive. We received advice and the island high and low tide times are displayed in the hall every day. Our Kaiseki dinner and breakfast were amazing, which we chose to have in the lovely tatami dining room of the restaurant.

I'm still overwhelmed by the Hotel, and the island in general. The two go together perfectly and the experience is unforgettable.

All previous reviews are correct. This is a wonderful place with great atmosphere.
The quiet magic of the island, once the daytrippers and masses of tourists have returned to the mainland, is best enjoyed from this ryokan. Only three rooms!
The food is very impressive.

We stayed here nearly ten months ago (should have written a review sooner, I know). I've been to Japan a couple times, eaten at 3 star michelin restaurants, stayed in inns all over the country. This is hands down the BEST place I've stayed in Japan, perhaps anywhere I've ever traveled. And the food rivals the top restaurants in Japan. It's AMAZING. And the service is beyond outstanding, the owners seem kind of psychic. We wanted to view the torii gate at high tide in the middle of the night, and they left all the doors open even though they are supposed to lock up at like 10 pm -- and the owner stayed up to wait for us to get back at like 1 am just to make sure we were okay. I mean, that's pretty awesome. Also, I accidentally took the room key with me to Tokyo, mailed it back, but they weren't even going to charge me, and the owner said he felt too bad to ask me about it, they were just going to replace it and never say anything. So nice!!!!! Anyway, I would recommend going to Japan just to stay at this place, wish we had booked more nights!!!!! Definitely hope to return one day.
