“Miyajima - not just the Torii Gate”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

Miyajima is very close to Hiroshima, and certainly worth the detour. You can get to the ferry dock either by streetcar or by the JR Train line (handy if you have a Japan Rail pass). There are two ferries - one run by JR, so it is free with the JR Pass. Aside for the oft photographed Torii Gate, there are a number of shrines and temples that are well worth the visit. That, combined with walks in the hills made for a very nice day.

“A bit of paradise in the Hiroshima bay”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Its slow paced, quiet and beautiful. It reminded me of Hawaii Island. Similar to North Kohala. There are great shopping for souvenirs but most of all don't forget to gorge on the oysters. Just get them from the window outside a restaurant - if you go inside, they may forget about serving you!

“Magical Island - even in the rain!”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

Well worth it! Lots of things to do but be prepared to have loads of photos of the Floating Torii to edit when you get home!
Getting there was easy enough, there are two options: local tram or JR. If you ask the Tourist Desk at the train station they are bias towards the JR option but I opted for the local tram and have no complaints. The main plus to the tram option is you don't have to get to/from the train station to catch your train to the Island. You can buy a combined tram ticket for the tram/ferry/ropewalk from most hotels (I got mine at the Sunroute Hotel). The tram ride is quite long but it we found it interesting. The ferries are very frequent and it only takes 10/15 minutes to get to the island.
I would strongly recommend checking the tide times before going, as this makes a big difference to the overall ambience.
Found the eateries on the island quite pricey, so I would recommend taking a packed lunch and just sit and enjoy the view (and fend off the hordes of hungry deer...)

“Beautiful place, even for a few hours!”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

We got here after 4pm, so most attractions were closing as we arrived... but it was still a wonderful place, and even just the ferry trip over - with the view of the 'floating' toru gtae to the shrine - was worth it! It was fun to see the deer (not quite as pushy as some in Nara, but still keen to try to get a biscuit from you!), and walking around the town was really lovely. The shrine is well worth a visit, and walking through it and around it gives you some beautiful views of the sea and the surrounding area. There are some nice little souvenir shops, and the maple-leaf-shaped speciality cakes are yummy, so do try a couple!

We'd love to have spent more time here - the handicrafts museum looked really interesting, and the ropeway looked great - but ecven just for an evening stroll, it is a lovely place to go.

“Beautiful Island, Climb Mount Misen!!”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

People flock here to see the Itukushima Shrine (gorgeous!) and the (in)famous O-torii 'floating' gate, but the highlight of my trip here was the 2-hour hike up Mount Misen, the highest point on the island. You can take a cable car up and down (1800 yen for a round trip, 1000 yen one way) but since you still have to walk about 30 minutes from the cable car station to the summit, we decided to walk all the way. We picked the most direct route - the Momijidani route, which bypasses the park of the same name, because it was the most direct. It also turned out to be the steepest route, with high rock steps at some points. This made it a rather tiring climb and if you are not of an average to high fitness level, it will be challenging. However, the primeval forest surrounding the trail is really beautiful and green even in winter, and the view of the Inland Sea off Hiroshima's coast from the top is breathtaking! It's also interesting to note that there are several temples at the top of the hill, and its worth taking a look at since you'd have climbed all the way up!! There's an observatory right at the top, where the views of the coast and islands is amazing. It was such a fun experience and it was really nice that all the Japanese hikers would say 'konnichiwa' to us. Non-Japanese ones too, because we are ethnically Chinese and therefore look Japanese. :P

Apart from Mount Misen, do visit the Itukushima Shrine and snap lots of photographs of that famous floating O-torii gate. It is beautiful, especially at dusk. The island has lots of free ranging wild deer and please do not pet them. They are not afraid of humans and will come right up to you so don't encourage behaviour that makes them dependent on humans because it really isn't good for them. I enjoyed taking photographs of them, though! Also on the island, oysters are a specialty and we had deep fried panko-crumbed ones for lunch. Very oishii. Its a touristy place so expect food to be a little pricier than in Hiroshima city itself, though.

It's beautiful there and a great getaway from the city and atomic bomb relics. Thoroughly enjoyed myself and would like to go back again some day.

One last travel tip: if you're holding on to a Japan Rail pass, get on the JR line to Miyajimaguchi station and transfer to the JR ferry at no extra cost, then enjoy yourself immensely!
