“Beautiful Japanese Island”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

This is what you think of when you think of Japan. Beautiful scenery, floating Torii Gate, 5 storied pagoda, wild dear wandering the streets looking for a handout from tourists. An experience not to be missed.

“Magnificent - even in the pouring rain!”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

As with touring, weather can be fickle. A bright and sunny winters day preceded the day we went to Miyajima, but it still remains a memory that we will never forget. Wild deer roam the small streets as you get off the ferry. Don't hold any paper or maps in your hand as they will eat them!!! We couldn't take the cablecar to Mt Bizen due to the mist and rain - it bucketed down, but it still was a treat. The shrine is magnificent and huge as are the lovely walsk around the town area dotted with little cafes. Don't miuss this place. We are planning to return in the future and stay for a few days.

“A must see place in Japan”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

Every time I visit Japan I make sure I get to Miyajima. The large torii gate set in the water is a fantastic thing to see. If you monitor the tide times you can walk out to the torii gate at low tide.
Itsukushima Shrine is a great place to check out and this is adjacent to the large torii gate. Both Itsukushima Shrine and the torii gate are fantastic to see illuminated at night.

If you enjoy a walk, Mount Misen is a fantastic place to check out. There is a rope way leading towards the summit. To reach the summit it is about a 1km walk, up 100m in elevation from the top rope way station. The round trip was around 1800 yen. the views from the rope way are spectacular as is the view from the summit. To get to the lowest ropeway station it is about a 10 minute walk from Itsukushima Shrine.

“wild deer abound”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

Parking is about 1000 yen, then take the ferry more yen. Once across you can walk all around. see the shrines, pet the deer (but don't feed them). Take the tram to the top of mt misen. walk back through the wood if you are athletic, have good knees, and want some peace. very strnuous, but worth it. See the shrines, eat good food, and shop. Very historic. A must do if you near Hiroshima. Bring a jacket in the winter, it is a bit icy and cold.

“Beautiful!”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

Packed with tourists and local wild deer in the day time, so an overnight stay is highly recommended as it is simply magical at night. Check the tide times too to make sure you can see the shrine & torii and high tide (watch the water patterns on the ceiling of the temple) and low tide (to walk all the way to the torii itself!). Sunset is amazing. Full of old narrow streets and wooden houses, fantastic hiking trails up Mt Misen with views of ocean, islands and mainland.
