Absolutely justified the expensive bullet train ride from osaka. The place is so so so wonderful. Hiroshima on a day trip was the highlight of my trip, ahead of kyoto and osaka. You take a 30min train to miyajimaguchi station then a 10min ferry which will pass by the shrine so get ready to take photo. Once you have arrived it is a 10min stroll to the shrine passing by the nonchalent deers. The floating shrine and the tori gate is stunning. A view you will not forget.

We spent a wonderful day at Miyajima - it is one of those places so beautiful that you will never forget it. It is easy to get a train to Miyajima (especially if you are staying in Hiroshima), then a 10 min ferry ride to the island. Your JR train pass also includes the ferry.

We arrived at low tide, so could walk out to the tori gate and examine it close up. We recommend visiting at low tide if you can. It was autumn and 'school trip season' so lots of people there but, like everywhere in Japan, the crowds are never a problem. In fact you will probably find yourself taking photos for other people and vice versa.

If you have the chance you should visit, as it is surely one of the most beautiful places on earth and well deserves its World Heritage Site status..

Wish I had more time, and less crowd. Arrive in the morning and look around then proceed to Misen Mt, and hopefully be back in the evening or at night to see it in night light and with a different tide. Beautiful and serene

Food: Skip the restaurants and enjoy the chestnuts, roasted oysters, and grilled squid from the street vendors. Mmmm.

Transportation: Feet. Some of the locations are not for those with issues with lots of steep stairs.

Deer: Watch out. These suckers are aggressive and will come up and try to eat whatever it wants to, from plastic bags to clothing. Steer clear the deer.

To see: Of course the Itsukushima Shrine and its torii are famous, but I was lucky enough to see a wedding. Go up the stairs to the magnificent Senjokaku and learn some more about Japanese history. Lots of interesting things to see in the back streets, and you may become an attraction yourself when you're munching on a tentacle out of a plastic bag.

Try to stay on the island so you can see this at high and low tide, as well as sunrise and sunset. Beware the snakes (and, according to the signs, the spiders too).

A great place, light on the international tourists and heavy on the history. This was by far the best time spent in Hiroshima.
