“Great way to get to know the Esteros”
Reviewed May 26, 2010

I highly recommend this Lodge for a stay at Colonia Carlos Pellegrini to visit the Esteros del Ibera.
1.The service was great. Matias, our host, catered for everything we needed (we were 8, with 2 little kids), from the meals, the excursions, the transfer, etc.
2.The location is excellent. Colonia C. Pellegrini is a very small town, therefore you can wander on foot, what for me was important was that the lodge was right on the lagoon, with its own dock, where you leave with the boat for the excursions or you can grab the canoe and paddle around, or just stand there and watch the marine life.
3.The food was really good and so abundant!
4. The rooms are nice and confortable. We left at 6 pm the last day and as no one was checking in, we could stayed in our rooms until leaving at no extra cost.
5. The Lodge has also a beatiful and big park and a swimming pool to relax after lunch and between excursions.
I would definetly return to Irupe.

With three more friends we spent 4 days and Christmas Eve at Irupe Lodge. It was an awesome experience as we celebrated very internationally and with a lot of fun. There where Swiss, Dutch, English and Americans all together celebrating Christmas the argentinian way with roasted lamb and champagne at midnight. all these days we went on many unforgettable excursions (horse, boat, 4x4, hike, canoe) and ate a whole lot of very nice food. the staff was very very friendly and our cosy room had lakeview and airconditioning which is very important in this climate. we chose the standard rooms and it was great; we saw the superior rooms from the outside, they have private balconies and are located at 50m from the restaurant, cabin style. looked tempting too... we got picked up by the owner Mauricio at the Posadas bus station, it was great to ride with him all the way to the lodge (4 hours), he explained a lot of things and pointed out the animals along the roadside. the four of us, we can only recommend to visit this place, it is worth 100 times the effort (the long way to get there).

Sudamerican service and cleanliness to European (Swiss) prices. It isn't fair. The rooms, the food and the excursions are definetely overpriced!
The location and the possibility to see animals and plants/nature are great. So go to Colonia Pellegrini but search you an other hotel/lodge.

as this was our first time back to south america with small children it has been hard to find places to accomdate our little ones. this lodge was awesome. thie owners and staff are very accomdating and friendly, nothing was too much effort for them. even when our 3 year old was sick they got the doctor for us. (there is a hospital and doctor in the township which is great). they made special food for our fussy children and the trips were excellent. there is heaps of room to run around and the town is very safe. all the staff were top knotch and could not be faulted. the food was amazing and was different every day and was very generous. i would definately recommend this lodge to anyone. it would also be very romantic and there is plenty of room for everyone. the wildlife viewing is excellent and the guides really know their species and where to find them.

We stayed at Irupe Lodge for four nights at the end of March. It’s a bit of work to get there. We flew from Buenos Aires to Posadas and then drove, with a driver hired by the lodge, for about a half hour on paved road and then two hours on dirt road. Although Irupe is part of a small village with some other hotels/hostels, you’re now officially in the middle of nowhere.

The room was quite nice. We stayed in a “superior” room, which was separate from the main lodge area, and had its own private balcony. It did share a wall with another room, but we hardly noticed it. Great big shower, good beds. I thought the food was good but my wife thought it was just fair. They tried to do fairly fancy meals, which was probably a bit difficult given their remote location. I read in one guide that portions were small, which was definitely NOT true; there were plenty of times when we couldn’t finish the meal. The pool was quite pretty; it’s sun-warmed, which was enough for us since it was pretty hot out. There were places where you could get shade in the first half of the day. We also ate all our meals on the veranda looking out at the lake, a pretty nice view.

If you like wildlife, the excursions were great. We did two afternoon cruises and one night cruise. The sunsets were quite pretty on the afternoon cruises, and great wildlife viewing: caimans, capybaras, deer, and lots of birds. The night cruise was good for wildlife but not as good; but the view of the stars and fireflies was worth it alone. (I did come home with ten mosquito bites, however; my wife, as always, was unscathed). We also hiked a mile or so to the nature preserve a couple of times, and saw howler monkeys both times. They also have a good video there with English subtitles. We also did a day riding horses with a local “gaucho.” He was basically a small cattle rancher. It was an awesome experience to ride around, see other gauchos in full gear, see a small one-room schoolhouse without electricity, and have lunch with the rancher.

The main drawback for us was that no one spoke English. None of the guides, drivers, or staff. I certainly don’t expect everyone in foreign countries to know my language, but since I booked the whole trip in English over the internet with Regi and Mauricio, I was a bit surprised. Regi and Mauricio were not there however; I’m not sure if they were on vacation or what. I did go back over my emails, and they did promise a guide, but it did not say bilingual guide. I speak a fair bit of Spanish and we were able to get along fine, but I know we missed a lot from not knowing the language. Then, when it came time to pay the bill, i.e., the balance for our rooms and to pay for all of our drinks, there was a bottle of wine on the bill that we had not ordered. In fact, some other guests (who were now gone) had ordered it and shared it with us. I protested, but I couldn’t really understand her explanation because I didn’t understand her Spanish well enough. Not surprisingly, they also omitted several drinks from our bill, so I suspect it all evened out in the end. I would definitely recommend the place to friends who want to see wildlife, but I’d tell them to check and see if anyone speaking English would be there to help them.

Dear Lance
Thanks for your review on tripadvisor. As you mention in your review we don't promise english or german speaking guides if they are not ordered. Although in 90% of the time we attend the lodge in english (either we or our manager are there). The extra wine was ordered by David the companion who shared your table. He ordered it in your name. We count on the honesty of our clients, I'm very sorry David had not asked you first. I hope this incident does not leave a bad memory. Thanks for the good ratings, we still try to improve things and go forward, so please let us know any other suggestions you would make. Kindest regards from the Ibera wetlands.

We, my wife and I, stayed at Irupe Lodge during our honeymoon in September. We spent 5 nights there and it was just fantastic.

From our honeymoon suite we had a great view to the Ibera lagoon. We thought it's always hot in subtropical areas but it is not. We were quite glad for the heating in our room. We enjoyed loads of jummy food and tried all kinds of local specialties - even vegetarian food which is unusual for Argentina.

Every day we took a different trip to explore the nature reserve. What we liked most were the safaris on the boat, especially the one at night is highly recommendable if the sky is clear. The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially Marcos the safari-guide. They even convinced us to go on a horse-ride with the gauchos (it was our first time on horse back and no sore legs afterwards). We had an unforgettable time and will go back for one of our anniversaries for sure.
As we didn't know exactly how to get there, we got picked up by the lodge owner at Posadas airport.
Afterwards we realized that we were quite lucky to have done so because another couple who stayed there had arrived by public transport and they said they had lost a whole day travelling in crappy buses.

Even though we first planned to guard that little secret we then thought others should be able to have such an wonderful experience too....

so here we go ***** for Irupe Lodge and the Team.
