Stayed here for 6 nights in February 2014 in a comfortable, large room with overhead fan and air-conditioning.
Staff and owners were very friendly, bringing water to you unasked and offering other drinks as well when you were sitting by the lovely pool.
Sunsets were beautiful from the bar over the Pacific Ocean. The peace of the hotel is fantastic. Birdlife was spectacular from the gardens and the open air restaurant.
Hotel is situated on top of a hill, roughly 1km up a gravelled road which is steep in places, but easily negotiable if you take your time.
Food is available at the sister hotel in the evenings, about 600 metres away and there are plenty of restaurants in the surrounding area, the closest being a 15 minute walk.
Having the use of a vehicle would be advantageous to explore the area and get to beaches etc.

Room Tip: All rooms face due west, the upper ones are smaller but have great ocean views from sizeable terrace...

Our stay at Alma was nothing short of breathtaking. Our room and sizeable balcony faced west, so every night we were treated to sunset over the Pacific. Wine by the pool, coffee and a delicious breakfast each morning, and foodie-approved dinners at the Alma's sister property, El Castillo, made this an incredible vacation. Scott and Russell were amazing hosts, and David was incredibly gracious and attentive without being intrusive. I'm already planning our next trip back!

Alma is a very relaxing and beautiful place to stay while in Costa Rica. Scott and Russell will do everything they can to ensure your stay with them is amazing. Be sure to relax poolside while you are there.

Russell and Scott are amazing hosts. They make you feel pampered and comfortable. Even before we got there, Scott was amazingly helpful in planning our time. Each day they serve a different gourmet breakfast. They arranged for us to go to a beach spot one day and the other day we were in town, we went canoeing with Uvita360 (also very good). The room was comfortable and well appointed. I would have loved a little more reading light but other than that, just perfect. Each morning, my husband and I sat outside having coffee by the pool with the ocean view. It was the best hotel of our ten day trip. The sister hotel --- Castillo has a great restaurant and pool and is a wonderful spot for sunset drinks. Love these two little gem hotels. Highly recommend.

The public areas are lovely with great views of the Pacific and the mountains. The rooms are comfortable with excellent A/C and our room had that wonderful view of both the ocean and the mountains. Each breakfast is unique, fresh and tasty. From the beginning, we were made to feel like valued guests. Throughout our 4 night stay Scott and Russell put our needs first. We arrived @ 10 in the morning and we were immediately made to feel at home. We were served our drink of choice and Scott and Russell sat down to chat with us as if we were old friends. During the course of many conversations with Scott and Russell we learned a lot about the area. We were invited to attend an art show @ El Castillo one night. While we were there Scott introduced us to a friend of his who in turn introduced us to some other expats. Their introduction to expats who had made the decision to move to Costa Rica was invaluable to us because it allowed us to talk to people who had moved to Costa Rica. Scott and Russell made that possible. We didn't want to leave Alma de Ojochal and it was an emotional departure.

This was one of the best part of our trip. We are from Canada and traveling with friends. Coming into Costa Rica not sure where we were going to stay even though we were stopping the area for a few days. We came across the Alma just before sunset. Scott met us as we walked up asked us if we'd like to have a cold drink and watch the sunset before we looked at the rooms. Before we even looked at them we knew that this was the place. The rooms were so comfortable with monogramed towels and actual duvets not comforters. Awesome in my books. Scott and Russell were beyond accommodating and made our stay so relaxing and at home. The breakfast was different every morning and the best. We hadn't decided on when we were going the next night but were very thankful they had room for us to stay again the next night. When we go back to costa rica we will definitely be going back to see Scott and Russell and stay again maybe even longer. The best!!!!!! Thanks you guys. From Canada

My wife and I booked a room here for 1 night, but would of stayed longer if they hadn't been booked up. This place is a definite gem and priced very reasonably compared to what you get at some other overly priced places in the area. We reserved the standard room which was by no means standard with ocean and mountain views, nice sized private balcony facing the ocean, a comfy kingsized bed, AirCon and hot water it was a treat to relax here. The included breakfast was the BEST we had yet in Costa Rica being that it wasn't the typical dish…."fresh & creative". Scott and Russell were super friendly and informative. We would definitely come back!!!!
