My husband and I booked a one night stay here as we had a night out in Glasgow and were going with friends from Cumbernauld. On arrival the main building is nice and we had a friendly enough welcome. We were then lead outside and across the car park to our room which was well away from the main building, very strange, there are lots of different buildings outside all seemingly used as hotel rooms. I've never came across a set up like this before and didn't like it at all. We had to have breakfast in the pub next to the main building in the morning, nice enough. The shower in the room was awful, just a trickle of water which took forever to get to the right temperature. Room had everything we needed and was clean. Just really lacked anything special, fine for a stop over I suppose but we won't book again. Sorry Castlecary!

We booked the junior suite which is the most expensive room in the hotel. So after reading the other reviews I was expecting something special. Unfortunately I was disappointed.

We were travelling as a family with 2 children and our dog. The room was in the mews building and it felt like we had been placed as far away from the main building and the occupied rooms in the other mews section as possible.

The room itself was fine, the bathroom was not. It had hairs, dust and was in need of a really good clean and a regrout of the tiles. You really don't expect to find other peoples hairs in your room,

I was really upset as we paid £119 for this room. We shall not be returning or recommending this hotel

We have visited the Castle Carey hotel on three occasions now and have always found the reception staff to be very friendly and accommodating. On these latest occasions we stayed in a Club Double room in the main hotel building whereas previously we had stayed in the mews building adjacent to the hotel. The rooms in the mews building were absolutely fine, being warm and clean and only a very short walk to the main building where the restaurant was situated. The Club Double room was larger and there was just that extra degree or two of comfort and opulence – lovely.
Breakfasts at Castle Carey House used to be served in the Cameron House restaurant in the main building and although the Full English breakfast was very generously proportioned, it didn’t score top marks with our party on both taste or meat quality front. That has now changed – for the better! The breakfasts are now served in the Castle and Snug pub attached to the hotel, and although the full English breakfast portion sizes are slightly smaller, the taste and quality is significantly higher. Service in the Castle and Snug pub is always very friendly and professional – excellent.
We have yet to try a main meal in the Cameron House restaurant – so cannot comment on it, though can say it is a very attractive place eat.
At £117 for a couple staying two nights in very comfortable accommodation – with a real ale pub attached and ample free parking … I can thoroughly recommend staying at the Castle Carey House hotel.

Room Tip: Try asking for a free upgrade to a Club Double room - if one is available on the day you arrive, you...

We had a lovely stay at the hotel. Our room was in a building not attached to the main hotel. First impressions was really good. Our room was on 2 floors. My only moan about it is there could have been another cupboard with larger drawers to hold the clothes that didn't hang up - as we had to leave these in the suitcase. The food in the Poachers Bar was lovely - good portions for your money. Excellent breakfast. The staff did get more friendlier as the days went by.
This hotel is in a great position to travel to Glasgow or Edinburgh. We did use the train from Croy Station ( about 12 mins drive away, and free parking) to go to Edinburgh and Glasgow - It was very easy.

Dog Friendly Stay. Make sure you let them know beforehand that you bringing dog so they can allocate chalet with wooden floor. Can't really fault they tried their best when their main restaurant out of action' we had breakfast in pub but it was nice, we all enjoyed fresh strawberries for breakfast. Fine really.

It is a shame that the little details are neglected at this quaint hotel. The rooms are quite tired and in need of an uplift. The grouting around the bath was disgusting. Needed a good clean and freshen up. The restaurant was nice and the food was lovely. The breakfasts would have been better served in the restaurant rather than in the pub next door, but it was ok, although not much variety.

The staff on reception whilst trying to be helpful lacked "joy". Their smiles seemed forced and although they did try to help if you had a need, it could have been given with a more enthusiastic attitude. 60 pounds a night is neither cheap nor expensive, but for just 30 pounds a night more the hotel Westerwood up the road where my friend's wedding reception was held was a lot more up market, fresh and modern.

Sorry Castlecary, but your rooms, carpet and bathrooms, need a face lift.

BHtlGuestRelations, Guest Relations Manager at Castlecary House Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded November 28, 2013

Whilst it is never pleasant to read a review that shows that we have not achieved our goal of providing our guests with a good quality value for money experience I certainly want to look at it as an opportunity to improve.

I very much agree with your annoyance regards the points relating to the bathroom grouting and I apologise for these errors which will be rectified.

As the hotel’s Guest Relations Manager I naturally do not want this to be your lasting memory of our hotel. We clearly did not meet your expectation, however, I know that there are many other rooms which you would love and adore. When you plan your next visit to Castlecary House Hotel I would be very happy to liaise with you personally to ensure that we find the right room for you.

Kind regards,

Jonathan
