“A curate's egg”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

We stayed at this hotel for a conference in January - one night only, but two lunches, dinner and breakfast were included. Conference facilities seemed fine. The bedroom was good - large, comfortable bed. Bathroom was good too. It was all very modern and clean. The food let the side down. First lunch was buffet style, and there was plenty of choice and it was good. Dinner was wholely unacceptable - quite horrible - sort of boiled chicken wrapped in a piece of undercooked bacon, and the drink was severely overpriced. A bottle of £3.50 Sancerre was priced at £30.00. Pudding was indifferent too. If you are going to run conferences from here you need to feed people well, and perhaps the management had got complacent over the food. Scrambled eggs at breakfast were interesting - slice-worthy, but there was a good choice. Staffing was unenthusiastic - I think a course on customer relations would have helped, although the receiption staff were good.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback following your stay at The Westerwood Hotel.
I am surprised to read your review, to date we have received very positive feedback from the conference organisers and fellow attendees. Should you attend the conference again i would encourage you to contact the restaurant manager if you found the meal unsatisfactory and they can rectify it straightway. We endevour to ensure our drinks prices are kept as competitive as possible with other 4 star establishments.

Although set just off the motorway and being a modern building, this lovely hotel has been styled like a Scottish Lodge. It has an airy of cosy elegance with its many lounges and huge arm chairs. Its easy to relax and wind away the afternoon in one of the lounges, sitting by the fire and sipping Scottish breakfast tea, taking in the stunning views over the golf course and to the hills in the distance.
The staff are warm, and welcoming and happy to make your stay as pleasurable as possible.
The main restaurant has the feel of a private library, cosy and comfortable and the food is excellent. The quality of the meat and fish exceptional, and the chef provides an excellent choice of dishes, even catering for the fussy vegetarian.
The breakfasts are splendid, with lots of choice including local delicacies.
The rooms are beautifully laid out, and the TV even has SKY! The beds extremely comfortable and the temperature of the rooms easy to control.
The staff in the spa provide wonderful treatments (especially wee Laura) and the pool is a lovely, low lit area to relax in.
We had four days of luxury, pampering and relaxation.
I would definitely stay again

Room Tip: As the conference rooms are set well away from bedrooms, I would imagine they are all quiet, but par...

We were welcomed by a young man who was pleasant, but I felt like he could have have been reading from a script. I would have liked to see a wee bit of his personality. At first glance the room was very nice.......a reasonable size, but cold.......it's January and the window had been left open! We did not have to worry too long though as we had to change rooms because our tv did not work. We were told that happened all the time and we were lucky that there was a room available for us to move to. The beds in the rooms are very hard.......this did not suit us, but others may like it. The pillows were flimsy at best and the quilt was a nightmare.......it was empty in parts and all the filling was clumped together in other parts.......although the bed linen was very nice.
We decided to eat in the hotel on the first night and thought the club bar was very pleasant. The staff were very attentive, but we were surprised that pint of lager and a soft drink cost us £7.20! A wee bit expensive for our taste. However we enjoyed the burger and the club sandwich that we had and can honestly say the staff were amazing.
In the morning, we were looking forward to the buffet breakfast .....but were very let down by it. There was supposed to be sourdough bread and bloomer bread available, but there was only white and brown bread. The menu stated there would be butcher style pork sausages and herb sausages......but again the pork sausages were missing. The selection of jams was replaced by either jam or marmalade........there was one type of muffin....instead of the selection promised.
The quality of the food we did have was poor........the hash browns were like rubber......I thought that this was because they had been sitting for a while, but on the second day, I noticed a fresh tray being brought out and tried one......it tasted just the same. The potato scones tasted like they had been cooked in margarine....yuck! The scrambled eggs looked like a big block of pasteurised egg......one slice or two? The beans were very nice though! The juices.....a great selection.....were kept in giant jugs that were not easy to lift when full.....they must have contained 2 or 3 litres!
On the Saturday evening we decided to spend some time in the lounge. The fires were on and the place was empty......we waited at the bar for several minutes, until we eventually found the barmaid at reception ......looked like she was doing a crossword puzzle! No sooner had we been served our first drink than she disappeared again. We noticed that the furnishings were very shabby......worn in places and even large rips in the arms of the chairs. Crumbs under other chairs also let the side down. After seeking the barmaid out a second time, and ordering another drink, she left never to be seen again. We then decided to go elsewhere for dinner /drinks and ventured into Cumbernauld.
Overall, we feel that when the staff were around, they were very good but they were often let down by the surroundings. This hotel is in a nice location, but needs to up its game to have guests believe the prices they charge are worth it!
When we checked out, nobody asked how our stay was or whether we had enjoyed ourselves which was also disappointing.
We would not choose to stay here again for a couples break...

We have stayed here twice now and been a great stay both times. Rooms are lovely and spacious. Enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi. Breakfast was one of the best we've had in a hotel, very varied choice, even down to the sausages being gluten free which is very much appreciated. Great location and handy for visiting either Glasgow or Edinburgh. We'll definitely be back!

Me and my sister came here just for a spa day, didn't actually stay overnight in one of their rooms so cannot comment on them. But we had a fantastic day at the spa facilities! We spent nearly 5 hours here relaxing in the spa, using the Jacuzzi which was amazing, the steam room, sauna, swimming pool and lounging on the heated mosaic chairs. They also have a lovely little relaxation room with chairs with quilts on them and low lighting where you can lie and have a glass of water or watch t.v! They have excellent shower and changing room facilities. We had a 25 minute facial each which was lovely, so relaxing and well worth the money! The restaurant area upstairs is also lovely and the staff are all very friendly and helpful! We had such an enjoyable day here we would definitely recommend it!

I have stayed at quite a few hotels for work (Hilton, Holiday Express, Novotel etc.) and Westerwood easily tops them. I stayed Jan 2013 and the rooms were clean with comfortable mattresses and chairs with irons, ironing boards, hairdriers etc. and with adjustable heating and a power shower (both increasinly rare nowadays). I had a view of the golfing green which I am sure would've been more impressive any other month than January.

When my parents went into their room, it had an awful smell but they were quickly moved with no fuss which was appreciated after a long journey.

The breakfast was really good and filling while as a hotel guest, I could use the decently sized heated pool with jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. I didn't use the gym but I believe that was also included.

The staff were helpful and the bar was well-kept and comfortable although take care with some of the cushions because I got covered in feathers one evening.

If I was in the area again I would definitely stay here. I would suggest keeping an eye on the prices on the website because you can get a heavily discounted deal.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the golfing green - it's a conference hotel so the rooms overlooking th...
