“Les Fermes de st sorlin”
Reviewed January 8, 2010

stayed at les fermes de st sorlin over new year 2009. Fast track ski had labelled this a 4 star - it wasn't, however we got the week very cheap. you do have to pay extra for bed linen and towels and the apartment was small. I am a firm believer you get what you pay for and what we paid for the holiday was well worth it. The village itself is picturesque, no high rise concrete towers like le corbier!!! the residence is very close to the piste and we could ski right back to our block G door. I must admit this was the first time I had skied in france, I usually ski in austria, I must admit the austrians label the runs better and it is easier to follow the austrian piste map. the skiing in les seybelles was good, the runs are long, there are quite a few old style button lifts but these were not a problem. On the whole I enjoyed the holiday and would recommend st sorlin d'arves.

We have just returned from Les Fermes, which our holiday company had graded 4 star. It certainly was not - no beds made up, no towels provided, pool area dirty, pool showers had no hot water. Our allocated apartment was filthy, especially the bathroom, which did not even have a mirror in it. We were moved the next morning. The accommodation is small and cramped. The "double" bed was tiny and the duvet was even skimpier. There were only two very small wardrobes for our party of 6. One of the wardrobes was in the double bedroom and was too shallow to accommodate the hangers. The shelves did not extend to the full depth of the wardrobe, so things kept falling down the back.
Furnishings were skimpy - curtains did not fit the windows and the finish was shoddy and cheap - paint chipped, lino cracked etc. We stayed last year at Arc 1950 - in a completely different league - avoid this place and go to Arc1950!

Self catered flats in St Sorlin was brilliant, and to accommodate the 8 of us wasn't easy at first! We had a spacious place with a big kitchen and comfy bedrooms.
This place is really good value for money and if you don't want to cook, there are plenty of nice restaurants nearby.
We had a great time skiing and after ski was even better with massive swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi.
We met loads of nice people in pubs around, and we would definitely do it again!

  • Liked — the huge pool afterski
  • Disliked — the road!

We stayed at Les Fermes along with 3 other families. Our experiences were varied with some of the accommodation being better (even though booked at the same price/spec ). For example we booked a 4/6 person unit and got two separate bedrooms, our friends booked the same and got one bedroom plus a sleeping area with bunks that was part of the lounge/dining area. So first tip, if what you get is not good enough kick up a fuss, you may be offered something better.

Here are a few key points

- St Sorlin is a good base for ski-ing Les Sybelles which is a nice scenic area. However, a lot of the blues are quite tough and we would not recommend the area for complete beginners. Access to the ski runs from Les Fermes is good (3 minutes walk)

- St Sorlin is, by the standards of most French ski resorts, a pretty nice town but Les Fermes is a good 20 minute uphill walk from the main part of St Sorlin

- the apartments are reasonably spacious

- they are relatively well equipped and furnished

- the balconies are pleasant and generally have good views

- the overall standard of cleaning was poor. For example, on arrival our floor was covered in grit/dirt. When we looked for a brush to clean it up we discovered there wasn't one. Presumably the staff member cleaning it before we arrived couldn't find the brush and didn't bother to go and get one either!

- lots of annoying things not working or broken e.g. kettle, toaster, furnishings. Maintenance does not appear to be a priority

- some (not all) of the corridors and stairways were a complete disgrace, filthy, broken plaster, badly decorated, graffitti. The average sink estate would compare favourably.

- the communal swimming pool is very over-crowded, the changing facilities were dirty and smelly and none of our party used the pool after the first visit.

- some of us were blessed with imbecile neighbours who insisted on partying noisily until 5am. The nearby presence of the Yeti Bar (which is a barren hole that smells of stale beer and is devoid of any charm ) acts as a magnet for the loudest and most dim-witted visitors to St Sorlin

- these same cretins couldn't find the larger waste bins and crammed their plastic bags into and on top of the smaller dustbins outside the apartments. These were then ripped apart by some dogs. Lovely! It was 3 days before the mess was cleaned up.

Overall the Femes De St Sorlin feels hopelessly under-managed. This is a shame because with a more diligent approach the apartments could be very nice. Whoever is in charge ought to be sacked immediately (their incompetence is evident everywhere and seems beyond redemption)

We would generally recommend St Sorlin as a good value and pleasant resort but suggest you stay somewhere other than Les Fermes (at least until they get their act together)

Dear customers and members of TripAdvisor,

We wish to thank you for your construtive comments which we have passed on to the appropriate services as our customers'satisfaction is very important to us.
We are very happy to read that the accommodation you spent your holidays in, was satisfactory and enjoyable.
Please note that following our customers'comments, we always take action to make your stay as perfect as possible.

We wish to give our customers some elements of reply and explanations :

-When making a booking, directly with us or with a tour operator, the brochures all mention that the lay-out of accommodations may vary slightly, therefore it is best to call in advance and precise if you wish to be attributed an accommodation for example with bunk beds. If having several bedrooms or cabins is very important to you, you may ask for a special request, so that we may guarantee you are attributed the exact lay-out you wish for.
Take into account that our staff is here to help you and will do its utmost to make your stay pleasant and enjoyable. We would not advise to 'kick up a fuss' as unjustified disrespectful behaviour towards staff is never a good start of a stressless holiday.

-When entering your holiday accommodation, make a list of anything you find unsatisfactory with regards to cleaning, equipement etc. and immediately contact reception, so that our cleaning or technician team may be called to help you, that's why they are here for and remember that helping you is their duty.

We have been informed of the state of some corridors and stairways, which were very clean at the beginning of the season. We strongly regret that some customers are disrespectful of our residences' rules.
Painting works are planned, however for the comfort of our customers, we cannot realise them during your holidays as paint odours may be unpleasant to our clientele.

Last with regards to the waste bins, our staff on site is doing its best to clear up anything left by unthoughtful holidaymakers and it is also the townhall's responsibility to organise the collect of rubbish.

Les Fermes de St Sorlin have been welcoming families and groups of friends successfully for years and we receive many positive comments of customers coming back year after year to this beautiful resort.

Best regards,
