Just returned from St Sorlin having gone skiing with my wife from 26 Dec 2009 to Jan 2 2010. We booked through Crystal and stayed at Les Sybelles in Self Catering. Firstly, the Crystal brochure describes this as ski in/ski out, which is why we chose it over Les Fermes. There are 4 residential blocks, we were in block b, only block d could maybe be described as ski in ski out, buts its still 20m to the piste. From blocks a and b it is an icy walk of about 120m up an icy hill and through a car park. Block c comes out onto the car park mentioned above. Not ski in and ski out if you've ever had proper ski in/out.
Secondly, the transfer is nearer 2 hours (plus the obligatory wait on the bus for other flights to land) and you are more than likely to arrive after 10pm at which point everything except the bars are closed (if you're quick you might be able to get a pizza to take away from the place next to the bakery but the kitchen had closed at 10), we were famished so ordered the grocery pack for 15 euros, not particulalry great, so if you can make it through to the morning the bakery over the road is great for fresh bread, croissant and pain au chocolat, plus the supermarket is just behind the ski shop.
Basic self catering facilities, although no kettle. Its 40 euros to hire the tv remote control for a week (we didn't bother) or 50 euros to have the apartment cleaned at the end of the week or you can do it yourself (which we did). You have to book an appointment for inspection on the Saturday of departure between 8-10am, before you get your deposit back, book it as late as possible as you have to vacate the room straight after the inspection. Note the family we met at les fermes said they had tv and a shower (its a hand held shower in a bath in les sybelles), and a kettle, but had to pay 50 euros for linen.
The worse bit, there is nowhere to store the baggage. The coach picked us up at 3.15pm, so do the math, over 5 hours with your luggage (worse if you get an early inspection). We asked our rep if they could arrange something as we clocked this time gap earlier in the week. The advice....."most people just seem to leave it lying around in reception all day"......not great when the security questions at the airport are "have you left your baggae unattended". Great advice crystal, that with your inaccurate description of the aprtments means we won be booking with you ever again.
Luckily we met a couple of women we got on with and tag teamed looking after the luggage all day, still not ideal. Effectively, arriving after 10pm and checking out before 10am, you only get 6 usable days holiday.
The village - stunning, very traditional, very French, not geared up for Brits so brush up on your french, but we loved it. Les sybelles is at the top of the village, its a very steep hill, there is a bus but stops running at 7.30pm, so we apres skiied at the bottom and ate and drank closer to home, this restricted our night time movements but we're not party animals anyway.
The skiing - we had 2 days of rain, but so did most of the alps that week (it rained in Val D'isere up to 2500m), the lower pistes just about held up, the top ones held up fine. We heard les deux alps closed down for the day with the heavier rain. Other than that, up the top it is stunning, but the run back into the village can get a bit hairy later in the day as everyone has to come back through the same valley. The usual applies, some of the reds are more like blues and vice versa. A word of note, as we went as only for the third time and immediately look for long confidence boosting greens, there aren't really any, and EVERYONE describes the run out of sybelles apartments back into the village as a blue.
Bars/Restaurants - At the top of the hill: Yeti Bar - spit and sawdust, full of young Dutch, French and German dudes. La Baroque - Great restaurant and bar, we booked in here for new year. The pizza restaurant next to the bakery was great (the bakery also does great sandwiches and croque monsieurs at lunchtime). At the bottom of the hill we liked the avalanch bar, and the neige restaurant.
