The location is nice, old houses that were well refurbished and a lot of items from different part of the world.
But outside the buildings a lot of cleaning should have been done. The stairs from the main building to the 3 suites really need some work. The natural swimming pool looks abandoned and dangerous.
It's great to sleep there, very quiet, very relaxing but the prices are of a 5 star hotel anywhere else in Portugal.
A lot to do if they want to keep those prices.

From the minute we arrived to be greeted by Sofia, we knew we hadn't booked long enough for our stay (5 nights). Our room was large, cool and comfortable. The door lead to a vista of meadow flowers, eucalyptus & cork-oak trees and the breakfast room - which is a large wooden building standing in the grounds. The frogs in the pond sang all day and night and - thanks to Sofia's detailed list of restaurant recommendations - we ate well every day. At the end of most evenings, we ended-up in the communal library/lounge for an hour or so, where Sofia and/or Jorge would often pop-in to chat - and Jorge to play selections from his excellent collection of World music.
The only downside of our stay is the fact that our kids are adult and have left home, so we were on our own - when they were children, our kids would have loved it at Muxima.
The World is too big and there's not enough time to see it all - but this is one place that we will definitely return to. Be warned, though, the relaxation you'll experience seeps into your soul - on our first morning back in the UK, we didn't wake-up until 9:30... oops!

When choosing Muxima – Montes Ferreiros I was not prepared for such a treat! Set in a rural location, the house has been rescued by present owners from ruin while retaining its traditional mud construction, taipa. It is imaginatively decorated using natural pigments, giving an appropriate background to the art collected from different parts of the world. The resident donkey, black pig, goat, hens and croaking frogs add to the atmosphere of rural bliss. The cork trees were last harvested in 1998 and are now protected by a good layer of renewed cork. I found two species of orchid flowering in front of the entrance; the eucalyptus, planted by the previous owners, provide wood for the fire and shelter against the wind. The spacious patio and sitting room burst with the colours of magazines, books and hand-finished pieces of furniture. In the evening the ambient light provides a tranquil atmosphere even if a little too dark if you wish to read, especially in bed, but not everyone has such a bad habits. We found the owners enthusiastic, knowledgeable and concerned about the preservation of the natural environment and I enjoyed every minute of our conversations with both of them. The water is heated by solar panels and I had the best showers of my life. The breakfast was so good that we did not want to depart early to catch the best light for photography. We just did not want to miss it, especially the freshly squeezed orange juice, the selection of cheeses and cold meats and the fresh bread, baked in a traditional wood oven. It was one of the places I have stayed in which I will never forget. This happens only every few years - the owners greatly contributed to it and I wish them all the best for the future.

Had looked forward to staying three nights in September 2012 because of the way portrayed in media and booking sites including I escape and reviews on tripadviser but it is nothing like the portrayal. More like a hugely overpriced hostel. Arrival procedure virtually DIY and most unwelcoming. Nowhere comfortable to sit outside or in - outside, cheap metal chairs and a hideous, no doubt infested, old bedstead and inside, a concrete bench. Not chic, not stylish, nothing beautiful anywhere at all - the whole place with all its concrete, plastic, cheap and broken furnishings and fittings is like a hideous pastiche of a third world country. No shade except one broken brolly. Our so called suite was horrible. Cheap Ikea lights and fixtures, concrete everywhere, sounds of someone being sick through the wall. The guest lounge with the only wi fi connection was permanently locked, even during breakfast. Venture into the 'eco pool' at your peril - unlike the photos, the reality is algae choked, stagnant, murky and smelly. Breakfast certainly nothing particularly special and served from cheap plastic containers. Road noise. The experience was so awful we left early after enduring two nights and spoilt what had been a great fortnight travelling round lovely, far more honest places. The only times we saw the host he looked sheepish - no wonder!

As others have observed, Muxima is a charming and delightful base from which to explore the largely unspoiled beauty of the West Coast of the Algarve.
Sophia and Jorge were extremely honest about the challenges that my wife who is a non-ambulant wheelchair user might find getting about the grounds and in the bathroom but they did everything in their power to minimise them .
The decor throughout the communal areas and individual rooms is beautifully thought out and pervasively tranquil - Sophia has given minute attention to the detail of the restoration of what was, a few years ago, a few delapidated and crumbling sheds.
The grounds (like their livestock)are quirky and even though the weather was mostly overcast during our stay it didn't seem to matter. The outdoor breakfats were a pleasure.
I tend to try to avoid contact with proprietors - a queasy English lack of ease with the invasion of someone else's territory, I suppose, - but I very much enjoyed talking with and listening to Jorge and Sophia. They work very hard and thoroughly deserve their success.

Room Tip: Each room has its own individual charm - it's very much a matter of matching your own taste to t...

Just once in a while everything comes together to make a holiday close to perfect and that was our experience at Muxima. Jorge and Sofia have created a laid back, casual retreat. No TV's, wi-fi only in the guest lounge and quiet, shaded seats and hammocks everywhere. The rooms are simple, comfortable and cool. Book a suite with a kitchenette and separate seating area if you have a family. Chaouen was just perfect for our little family of 3. Our son loved Jorge and adored the animals - a goat, donkey, dogs and a pig, not to mention the hundreds of frogs in the eco-pool. It is simply wonderful.
A great place to let the kids run free. Jorge and Sofia have young boys themselves so there are no worries about it being child friendly. It's only 10-15 mins from some amazing unspoilt beaches which are almost empty.
The daily breakfast is a sociable affair with a varied provision every day and was the highlight of our day. We met a lot of fun, interesting people who also seemed to be enjoying their stay. It is so dark at night we slept incredibly well and more to the point so did our toddler!
We genuinely loved Muxima and cannot wait to return.

We spent three nights here in mid September and really enjoyed it. Jorge and Sofia were welcoming hosts, the breakfasts (served al fresco) were great and the 'biological pool' - a large pond which is cleaned naturally and complete with lily pads and frogs - was unique! We stayed in the Soutouboua suite (bedroom, bathroom and living/kitchenette area) in the 'Casa do Monte', a short distance uphill from the main building. We thought the room was really well decorated and very well equipped for cooking a simple supper (large fridge, all the utensils you need and two electric hobs). Our only complaints would be that it was a bit dark in the room and the bed was quite hard, but apart from that we thought it was great. One other point is that the water is solar heated and although we had brilliant hot, powerful showers in the evening I'm not sure that there would have been so much hot water in the mornings - I don't know but it probably depends on how much you/your neighbours have used the night before. Overall, highly recommended for a warm welcome and a peaceful place to stay close to some great beaches.

Room Tip: We enjoyed having the option of preparing food in our room for a simple supper - only the suites hav...
