“Half day trip to a beautiful park”
Reviewed May 7, 2013 via mobile

This is my 3rd time to Tokyo and we wanted to do something different rather than just shopping and eating. Since we arrived Tokyo late April, we decided to catch wisteria (Sakura season is over and this year is rather warm and wisteria were already in full blooms).

Ashikaga Flower Park is in Ibaraki Prefecture and requires 2 hours of traveling by rail from Tokyo. The journey is covered by JR pass which saves you a good 7000yen. Just use Hyperdia and search for Tomita JR station and follow the route. Remember to walk fast when changing trains at Oyama since they are perfectly timed. Do not alight at Ashikaga station! After you reach Tomita, it is a 15-20mins stroll from and towards the right side of the station. As you walk out of the station there will be some stalls selling bento, onigiri, fried chicken and etc. We bought some food from them since we do not want to queue for food in the park. They were delicious and cheap! We brought them to the park and had a quick picnic. There were chairs and tables provided in the park, you can also bring your own mats to picnic and enjoy the beautiful sights.

The entrance fee was 1600yen however it can be as low as 500yen during non-peak seasons. The fee is worth paying since the wisteria and azaleas were at their best.

We spent an amazing 2 hours in the park savouring the pretty blooms and great weather.

They have many different flowers according to season and generally is per below:

Feb-March-Tulips
March-April - Sakura
May - Wisteria, Azalea, Shiba
May-June - Rose
June-Aug- hydrangea
Sept - Sunflower/Lavendar
Nov-Chrysanthemum
Winter-Xmas lighting

There are 4 huge wisteria tress - purple in color. There are also many other varieties ranging from white to pink to yellow. Amazing!

You can check out the website - http://www.ashikaga.co.jp/en/wisteria.html

There are tours offering this as a side trip together with strawberries picking. They cost typically about 10k yen per person with lunch and travel mode is bus. However if you have a JR pass, I'll strongly recommend you to go on your own. We didn't speak Japanese and yet we were able to figure our way out. We spent less than 5000yen for two person with JR pass.

Please check out my photos (they look so nice even though they were taken using iPhone).

I think this is the highlight of my trip to Tokyo and it should be ranked as #1...I am just a very "blooms" person.

Very peaceful, beautiful place to visit. Highly recommended. It's a long train ride but well worth it.

“Amazing Wisteria Displays”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

Thanks for directions to the park. Hyperdia is a godsend for finding train routing. We used the Kanto 3 day pass (8000 yen for three days) to see both the Park and Nikko. As said, go to Tomita Station. It took us about 2 hrs from Tokyo. If there are no people to follow, there is a sign showing the route. It is about a 15 minute walk. Fee is 1600 yen.

In late April, we were at the height of the white/pink wisterias and just past the height of the purple ones. We could see the yellow ones just starting to bloom. There is a schedule of the wisteria on the park website.
http://www.ashikaga.co.jp/en/wisteria.html

There were blooming wisteria all over the park. They were able to train wisteria to cover bridges and walkways and a 100 x 50 ft area.

I am a photographer and I went crazy taking beautiful shots and video clips.

It was a highlight of our whole Japan trip.

“Wisteria blooms in Spring is worth the visit.”
Reviewed September 25, 2010

Very popular with the local Japanese aunties and uncles and busload of tourists, but when we were there, we are the two foreigners amid the crowds. Guess not much foreign tourists go there as it is quite out from Tokyo city. However, I would emphasize that it is worth going during the Wisteria blooming period in springtime. I went in early May, while I was able to catch the Wisteria flowers, it was not in full blooms. Maybe a mid May timing would be best to visit.

Directions
- From whichever part of Tokyo, use the JR lines to arrive at Oyama station. Shinkansen also stop at this station, so transport is made faster from further places.
- Once at Oyama station, switch to the JR Ryomo Line (a very old train station). Trains are the older generation types.
- Take the train bound to Ashikaga / Omata / Maebashi.
- Alight at Tomita station and follow the signboards to Ashikaga Flower Park. (Do not alight at Ashikaga station eventhough the name is the same. It's about 10-15km away from the park). Taxi fare from Ashikaga station to the flower park cost SGD40++ one way.
- Train has an intervals of 1hr. So if you miss or alight at the wrong station, prepared to wait for about 1hr's time.
- A good cue is to see the crowds of local Jap aunties and uncles, when masses of them alight, it's the park they are heading. On the way there, maybe could ask a couple of them for directions in broken Jap language -> "Ashikaga Hana Gyoen?".
