We are unable to find any other hotel in Nagano during my last visit, and this is the only one that we can find. It's about 1 hour drive to Nagano, and the hotel surrounding is very quiet. There are only a few small restaurants and only one convenient store but they close early. If you are planning for a getaway onsen vacation, this may be a good choice.
It's a traditional hotel, and we stayed in a Japanese style room (tatamis & futons). The onsen is nice and never crowded, there are two onsen area which separate Man & Woman. The best thing is that the hotel will switch the side every day so that everyone can enjoy the different view of the onsen...a Plus to the hotel in this part.
People are nice, but they speak very little English, need some body language to help in communication all the time.

Service at this roykan is great but the food is so-so and the onsens are a bit small. Bessho Onsen is rustic, with a couple of old shrines and old world public baths. I would suggest a day visit rather than a stay.

This hotel is very accommodating to the demanding traveler. The customer service excels all expectations; the food is beyond what I have experienced anywhere in Japan; the hot springs are not crowded and very clean; the rooms are very quiet, some with beautiful views.
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: The rooms with a view in the corner are the best.
