Yamadasan is one of the cosiest and family friendly lodge have seen. Marcus and his team make you feel at home in a relax and warm atmosphere despite the cold weather. The scenery of Madarao is simply stunning. The food was well above the standard of the other restaurant in the area.

Room tip: all rooms are great.

Our first trip to Japan for my family of 4 (hubby, kids 12 & 10 and I) and one we will not be forgetting for a while, all made more memorable with our stay at Yamadasan.
The train ride from Tokyo station with Shinkansen bullet train was appox 90mins to Iiyama (one stop after Nagano). There was someone from Yamadasan to pick us up at the train station. The picturesque ride to Madarao is roughly 20mins. Madarao is a quiet village with a mix of Aussies and Japanese working and skiing.
Yamadasan is a fantastic little lodge with rustic alpine charm nestled in amongst Madarao, walking distance to lifts and other eating and drinking establishments.
Cooked breakfast and fresh fruit available every morning, designated areas outside for kids to build snowman and use lodge's toboggans and equipment, huge drying room, large bedrooms compared to a typical Japanese size room (tiny) some with own bathroom (small but it does the job), room heaters, quiet lounge/sitting area with Netflix and heater and an intimate dining area where you can talk to staff and interact with other guest and share adventures. Washing machine to use at guest convenience and downstairs a western onsen which needed the occasional top up with hot water and 2 public showers with hot water and great pressure.
We all felt safe staying at Yamadasan and we were very happy with the set up and service from Marcus and his team.
Highly Recommend

Room tip: Skiing tip - if you have your own equipment its worth bringing it. Ski hire is more expensive than Aussie prices. Lift passes reasonable.

Many thanks to Marcus and the entire staff at the Yamadasan lodge. Fantastic location just a 5 minute walk to the slopes, 5 mins to the bars and restaurants located just over the road.
Nice big rooms with comfy beds, big thick duvets and toilet and basins in each room.
Great fried breakfast everyday with coffee and lots of fruit. You can choose to spend the evening in the bar or head out to the bars where you’ll find live music, great food and lots of friendly people. We did both and had a ton of fun in Madarao. Lots of nice little touches to help you have a stress free holiday, station transfers, warm boot room to dry your stuff, tv area with a lovely warm fire and for the smokers an outside undercover area which we took a little speaker to, drank beer and talked about our day.
This was my first trip to the Japanese mountains and Yamadasan lodge made it an experience I won’t forget. 100% rating from me and I will definitely be back. Full marks to the team and looking forward to the next time.

Stayed here for a week and must say I was very happy. Great value and super friendly staff.
Rooms are basic but clean and with comfortable beds.
An easy choice during ski trips to Japan and Madarao.

Thank you Marcus and your staff, for a most excellent stay. Rooms are big, comfortable and cozy warm. The lodge and staff are awesome. We are travelling with another family (2 x kids under 12) and the staff interact so well with them and nothing is a problem. 10/10 experience!!!!
