“Outstanding B&B on Loch Alsh”
Reviewed July 4, 2008

My wife and I and another couple had the privilege of staying at this fine B&B for a night in May, 2008. The home is located across the road from a huge loch, and just a little ways from Kyle of Lochalsh in one direction, and the most photographed castle in Scotland, Eilean Donan just down the road in the other direction.
The hosts, Ross and Jayne Calderwood are super nice folks, very hospitable. Ross is a first-class piper, and he sure can play the pipes. What an inspiring sound. He also makes bagpipes and maybe will show you the results of his talents if you ask. Their son also plays music, and we heard his talents as we arrived. Just a super-nice Scottish family. Only 2 rooms available as I remember, but both were ensuite and perfect, with beautiful views. The larger one has a huge clawfoot tub. Parking is across the street in a parking lot off the roadway. Breakfast was tasty and plentiful.
If you stay here, be sure to eat the evening meal in the seaside town of Plockton. Grumpy's takeout is great-tasting and reasonable, or there are two nice restaurants.

  • Liked — Bagpipe performance by the owner, just wonderful to hear up close.

Ross & Jayne make you feel welcome the moment you walk in the door! We booked the king size room & loved it! Great views from our bedroom window, a huge tub to soak in (including bubble bath) after a long day of sight-seeing and a comfy bed to lay your head. Breakfast was delicious & coffee was fresh every morning. Wish we could've stayed more than just a couple days.

On a holiday to Scotland we found this lovely B&B quite by accident.
We saw it, knocked on the door and were welcomed by the owners Jayne & Ross Calderwood.
Both the ensuite rooms were immaculate. They were modern, clean, comfortable and well equipped. But not in an over fussy way. The rooms showed an individual flair for design and gave a real home from home effect. You get the sense that the owners of this lovely house are sharing the best they have to offer to their guests. And in this instance, their best is very good.

They're a warm and friendly family, who share their passion and knowledge of the area with you. They are still excited by their surroundings and who can blame them. If you have any interest in hill walking, boating, climbing, biking, fishing, bird/wildlife spotting, then this is the place to do it.

We initially intended to stay one or two nights in Reraig, but stayed for the whole week.

The breakfast was consistently excellent, including a vegetarian option for our teenage offspring, who is a notorious faddy-pants.

Ceol-Na-Mara is superbly situated about five miles from the Skye Bridge. Surrounded by hills and a loch directly in front of the B&B, seals are often spotted through the breakfast room window.
And drive/bike/walk/boat five miles in any direction for the most stunning scenery that Western Scotland has to offer.
Village amenities are good too.

It's excellent value at £30 per person, per night.

We're already planning to back twice next year.
