“One of the most excellent places ever”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

Our rooms were cozy on the wild night of 31 October when we arrived at Balmacara Mains at the end of a very long journey from Glasgow. Our neighbouring rooms – one double and one twin – were contemporary, verging on the luxurious, and among the best we've ever stayed in, the benchmark certainly set very high. The morning gave us breathtaking views over Loch Alsh and the soaring peaks across the water. Breakfast was second only to the Glandwr Tresaith breakfast in west Wales – delicious fruit salad, an excellent selection of cereals, and the tastiest full Scottish ever – prepared to the highest standard by (rather unexpectedly) Norman our host. You should find any excuse to make sure you stay here; it's fabulous – and the free wifi works ;-)

Beautiful view, wonderful breakfasts, friendly hosts, helpful local information, lovely contemporary yet warmly decorated bedroom and bathroom. Convenient location for seeing the castle and onward to Isle of Skye. We hope to come back one day!

Room Tip: We had room #8 up the stairs and could see the lake from bed - so beautiful!

I'll start with the good. The location is excellent & the views across the loch from the car park & front of the building were quite stunning. The bed was large & comfortable with quality bed-linen. The breakfast was also very good.
Now those annoying bits that frankly tarnished our stay. We chose Balmacara Mains as our mid point stay on our whistle-stop tour of the Highlands as it was going to be the only night we were 'staying in'. As such we thought we'd treat ourselves to a bit of luxury/romance so we booked the large room at the back with the big bed & double bath. The first thing that annoyed me was the number of hairs left over from the previous guests around the bath & in the bath. Anyone can miss the odd one but there were several. This really is a no-no for an establishment charging over £100 a night. The other annoyance was the SKY TV. Please note Lucy - if you don't subscribe to any of the TV packages then SKY TV is useless. All guests end up doing is scroll through channels they can't watch! Very annoying! You might as well have Freeview - at least you know you can actually watch the channels on the menu! There was a fault with the sound on the TV anyway which made any viewing impossible but I accept this could have happened at any moment.
I've read a few of Lucy's responses to some of the less than flattering reviews & she has mentioned about guests not bringing things to her attention. Well when I did bring up these issues after breakfast there was a distinct look of horror & disgust on her face that only made the situation more uncomfortable. Not so uncomfortable however to offer any sort of discount though and the full amount of £105 was promptly requested!

Thank you for taking the time to post a review, Giles. I think the look on my face when you said there were hairs in the bath was surprise, as not only do we have very diligent housekeeping staff but I also check all of the rooms once they are ready for guests. I have spoken to our housekeeping staff and once again I can only apologise for this and, had I not been so shocked, would have offered a reduction on the room rate.
With regards to the television, I fixed the problem with the sound that day, and apologise again that this happened during your stay with us. We find that most of our guests don't come to the Highlands to watch television and are quite happy with the main channels to catch up on the news, etc, but we do appreciate that some people may wish to, so we also have DVD players and a library of DVDs for guests to borrow should they wish to do so. There is also free wi-fi throughout the building.
We are very pleased that you enjoyed the lovely views, comfortable bed, luxury linen and breakfasts. As you didn't pay by card I am unable to offer you a refund but would like to offer you a discount on any future stay with us.

Luxury accommodation and views to die for. The comfiest bed I've ever slept in. The breakfast was first class with extremely friendly and helpful staff. Very easy acces to the Isle of Ske and beyond. The town of Kyle of Lochalsh is a couple of miles away for all your needs.

Room Tip: Super en-suite and views

We stayed here because of its location, close to Skye but also close to lots of other locations such as Plockton. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the room, the breakfast and the friendliness of everyone we met.
The room was huge, well equipped and with a super king size bed. Just the thing to fall into after a hard day. The walk in shower was roomy and with an endless supply of hot water. There was a bit of noise from the floorboards upstairs but this is probably something the owners cannot do anything about and it didn't affect our sleep as everyone was very considerate.
The breakfasts were delicious and all served by friendly and helpful staff with views of the sun rising over the loch.
The only downside was that there is no evening meal which means a short journey to Plockton or Lochalsh but you know that before you book.
A great place to stay if you are in the area and very reasonably priced.

Room Tip: The downstairs room 3 with its own entrance and sun room was lovely.

All of the (positive) mentioned above. Lovely comfy room with mesmerising view over the water. Warm spacious room with spacious bathroom with good size comfy bed. Ample breakfast with great choice and well cooked with lovely staff serving in the morning room. Again looking over the water. Great base for Plockton, Applecross and Skye. Staff helpful with information on local area in particular Norman. Couldn't find fault even if We had tried.

Room Tip: We had room 8 which had another room joining (locked for our stay). Was lovely and worth the slightl...

We arrived late after a long day travelling from john o groats, we had opted for the loch view rooms but we had to wait for the morning to really apreciate them. The bed was so comfortable i was out like a light, breakfast was faultless too with many options from porridge to a lovely scottish breakfast. cant recommend more.

Room Tip: upgrade to a loch view room.
