“Excellent Small Hotel”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

We stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights last September. It is in a teeny little hamlet just out of Kyle of Lochalsh, pretty easy to find. We were not blessed with the weather but that didn't detract from the stunning views over towards Skye. Our hosts were very welcoming with just the right mix of friendliness & professionalism. Our room was Raasay and overlooked the sea, it was very clean and tidy, i'd call it 'Scottish Modern', with a lovely bathroom. We were very hot though, and had to open the window - however better than being too cold!
Dinner both nights was very well executed if nothing hugely fancy, i was a little disappointed it differed so greatly from the menu outside the hotel but it might have been because we were on a special deal. The breakfasts in the morning were self service buffet other than eggs which were freshly cooked to your taste, with a good selection of hot dishes as well as cereals etc. The hotel was not packed when we stayed but there were probably another 4 sets of visitors, and service was superb, just perfect.

There are a few things to do in the area and our host was very helpful in suggesting places to see and how to get there. The scenery was stunning, it is a wonderful part of the world, and very handy for Skye.

I would definately recommend this hotel

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room if you can

Tingle Creek is located very close to the bridge to Skye, with a stunning view of the sea. The hotel itself is fairly new, with modern comfortable (but small) rooms. Breakfast was quite good; we were a bit disappointed not to have dinner available during our visit though, so check ahead. A good spot to stay if you are visiting Eileen Donan as it is close by.

We booked in for one night only but would have happily stayed longer. The room was very comfy (we had one overlooking a carpark not the sea view but we didnt mind). The ensuite was quite luxurious and we were told that the name of the place and the bathrooms were down to a previous owner who won a lot of money on the racehorse Tingle Creek!! The owner pointed out good walkies for our dog nearby (but be aware sheeps and farm doggies wander around too so if you haven't got a good pooch keep them on the lead). Our dog had a good run about and politely avoided the sheep and collies (really she's a coward).

We had a dining table overlooking the views to Skye - fab. Food very good and we were told it was ok to leave our elderly sleepy dog in the room while we dined which is very decent of them. Some places fuss too much about housetrained dogs being left alone but she had travelled to hundreds of hotels with us and she knows the score. One night a week they dont do food - but help get takeaways if folks dont want to travel out to one of the other villages for dining. We wouldnt have minded such an arrangement in truth but the restaurant was open the night we were there. Breakfast was fab too with morning sea views. The staff / owners are very friendly and helpful at all times.

The lounge is large and comfy and after a day walking in the Scottish scenery we could have stayed on one of the sofas all evening. The views from the seaward side are lovely as the sun sets. After our evening meal we collected the pooch and went into the bar to join in the locals quiz night which was fun. We noticed other guests vanished and didnt venture into the bar but we like to get to meet people and join local community events whenever possible.

There was a collection of german and american guests and we found the atmosphere a little stilted at times in that hushed hotel way but we enjoyed ourselves and found the place a relaxing haven. One other guest was a mild nuisance but that is no reflection on the hotel. And the wifi worked perfectly in our room so not sure what problems the other guests had?? Would definitely stay here again, especially if they put a footrest by the sofa near the window overlooking the sea!!! I would park myself for longer :)

Being adventurous and wanting maximum flexibility, we did not have reservations for every night of our vacation in September 2012. We ended up at Tingle Creek when we discovered all of the b&b's in Klyeakin were booked the evening we ended up arriving there. One of the inn keepers recommended Tingle Creek just back across the bridge near Klye of Lochlash. The staff was very nice and made sure we could still get in the hotel's restaurant for dinner before it stopped serving. The food was good and they accomodated a couple of substitutions. The room was very clean, but had a faint smell that they tried to mask with one of those automatic spraying airfreshners. The perfumed scent was too strong and we had to turn it off. The perfumed scent was even stronger in the hallway. The ensuite bath had one of the longest bathtubs I have ever seen. The bathroom floor seemed to have some odd high and low spots, but it was very clean. One big disappointment was that the wifi did not work. For one night, it was safe, comfortable (apart from the perfumed scent sprayers), clean and convenient. We paid £90 for 1 night for a room with 2 twin beds, which seemed high compared to other places we stayed that were much nicer during our trip.

After a day of roaming the Isle of Skye, our day ended on a somewhat sour note as we had a tire blow out just outside of Portree. Luckily, we were able to get a tow directly to Tingle Creek for the night. We called ahead and they kindly arranged dinner for us. The barman, Roy, greeted us with a selection of whiskys, which were much needed after our recent adventure, and shared his knowledge of scotch and local history with us. Dinner was very tasty - thanks to Andy for encouraging us to try traditional Scottish offerings. Wonderful food, nicely presented. The venison cobbler and fish dishes were especially delicious as were the desserts, a Baileys chocolate cake, sticky toffee pudding and a raspberry cranachan. Breakfast overlooking the water was lovely and filling. Andy, who kept us laughing the night before, was with us again and made sure we tried the haggis. ☺ Afterwards they kept us company while we waited for our car to be fixed.

While the rooms were nicely appointed and spacious, the location and views were great (nice deck and surrounding area for a morning stroll), it is the friendly and welcoming attention of the staff that made this stay for our family. We definitely felt like we were staying with friends/family rather than an impersonal hotel.

We found this tucked-away hotel when seeking accommodation online when we were in the visitor centre at Eilean Donan castle. It sits on a tiny shingle beach (frequented by local sheep) in a pretty spot overlooking Skye. It is run by lovely people. The room we had overlooking the beach was bright, clean and comfortable. The dining room was closed the day we were there, so we couldn't sample the food, but breakfast was excellent with great porridge and maple syrup, eggy bread and bacon! Don't undertsnad the reviews complaining the decor is dated - it is charming and serves the local community as well as visitors.
