“A cheap tourist attraction, but nothing too special.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2011

After living in Japan for nearly 12 years and visiting numerous other castles throughout Japan, I enjoyed visiting another castle in Japan, but found it to be lacking in comparison to other castles I had visited. There isn't much to see within the castle walls and then there's the view from the top of the castle. The castle grounds appear to be more of a park for people to walk around and enjoy the weather than learn something of what once was. To further degrade the experience, a small amusement park for kids was constructed for children. I hate to say it, but it's a cheap tourist attraction that's only good if you need to burn an hour or so of your time.

“A hidden gem!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2010

I came here on my way to a hot spring trip in Hakone. I didn't know much about the place before I came and just wanted somewhere to spend the morning.

Odawara Castle really took me by surprise. The castle isn't real; it was rebuilt in 1960 but the inside has been made into a museum on the events in the area. There were lots of exhibits of personal items from the Edo period and also lots of cool samurai outfits and weapons, standards etc. There were helpful explainations of the main characters and events of the area and then on the top floor you could look out and see where the events had taken place.

There is a decent and reasonably priced restaurant in the grounds and a place where you can hire samurai costumes or geisha outfits- of course it's touristy but everyone just had fun with it.

Overall, a great place to spend a couple of hours if you're interested in the history of the area.
