If you are feeling adventurous and need some change from all the traditional Japanese gardens, hanami parties, etc. - Akebonoyama Park's tulip garden is something worth seeing, especially during the Tulip Festival (makes things a bit livelier). There's not much more there to see for a tourist, apart from a nice temple, but it is nice if you want to spend some time breathing fresher air and relaxing.
All in all it is a nice half day's trip from Tokyo. Especially for families (picnic and 'agriculture') and couples (romantic flowers and cute photo opportunities). One thing to have in mind, though: if you don't have a car, you'll have to ride a bus from the train station (they accept pasmo/suica) and there's going to be a crowd on the bus during the best season.
