“Move over Basil, here comes Boris!”
Reviewed June 22, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Absolutely top place to stay, would recommend Exmoor Cottage Holidays to anyone.
Having visited before it was no surprise to find the cottage immaculate and thoughtfully provisioned with the essentials but the home made scones and cold beers waiting in the fridge were an unexpected bonus! Never seen that before!
Mel and John are the consummate hosts while comic relief is provided by the cranky old maintenance man, Boris, who makes Basil Fawlty seem normal! (Its worth a visit just to see his Mr Angry routine; don't mention the war!!).
All in all a fantastic place to unwind, will be going again!!

Thank you for your humorous but not entirely accurate review. Alas we don't provide beers, scones, or a cranky old maintenance man, but fresh scones and cold beers are available at the shop and pub just a few minutes walk away.

“Lovely rural retreat”
Reviewed May 16, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

My fiancée and I stayed at Garden Cottage this past week. The cottage was lovely, the setting peaceful and relaxing in a little hamlet. The Black Venus pub is only a 5 minute walk away and we had a great lunch there. Lots of walks around the area, Heddons Mouth probably the best place we went to. Central location to lots of places to visit. Very nice.

Thank you for your lovely review. Heddon's Mouth is an amazing walk, as is the Valley of Rock outside Linton. We are very fortunate to have such a good pub nearby! We hope to see you again soon.

“Lovely cottage, lovely peaceful setting, owners very friendly and helpful”
Reviewed May 14, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Stayed with elderly in laws and our three dogs, the cottage is ideal for anyone with limited mobility. Garden cottage is set in a beautiful location with rolling hills and peace and quiet. Local pub the Black Venus is well worth a visit and the owners of the local shop are very friendly and helpful, the shop is well stocked and the rabbit pie is a must to try.
Challacombe is a great base from which to explore Exmoor. Lots of lovely walks right on your door step and just 5 miles away is the lovely Wistlandpound Reservoir.
The owners are very helpful and friendly and the cottage is well furnished, a great find and we can't wait to return.

“Small but Beautifully Marked!”
Reviewed April 20, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

My wife and I along with our daughter and her 12 week old baby stayed here last week. We enjoyed our stay and the weather was glorious, which certainly helps. Mel and John are very helpful and the lemon drizzle cake from the village shop is the best. Space in the cottage bedrooms is very limited but this did not bother us too much, although anyone travelling with a lot of gear might struggle. The cottage does not have a washing machine but there is an on-site laundry which Mel will open when needed. With two athletes and a baby we would've preferred to have instant access to a macine but we have a solution! Put the crockery in the dresser and there will be space for a machine. Simples! We would definitely stay here
again, it is a beautiful area.

“Good disabled facilities, but could be improved upon”
Reviewed October 21, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

My friend I was travelling with uses a powered wheelchair (not full time) and we were able to access the garden cottage with it easily to re-charge it in the evenings. A full time user might find the gravel outside a bit challenging though. Excellent wetroom but did leave a suggestion that the proprietors might like to consider a shower seat, either fitted or portable.
The cottage generally was really good. Excellent small enclosed courtyard area where the two little dogs could be let out in safety. The beds were a little uncomfortable in that I could feel every spring in the mattress, and did leave a suggestion that some mattress overlays might be a good investment. The grounds generally were lovely with a fabulous looking childrens play area at the top of the hill behind the cottage. Particularly liked the philosophy of John and Mel and what they are trying to do with sustainability, re-cycling etc.
Perfect peaceful spot for exploring Exmoor and we will return for another visit I'm sure.

Thank you for your review. Alas we are not able to be more accessible for wheelchairs but do allow vehicles into the courtyard and very close to the door of Garden Cottage for people with limited mobility. We are looking into a portable shower seat.
The mattresses in Garden Cottage were bought new for the 2014 season, they are mid-range and some guests love them and others do not...they are a difficult thing to judge.

We are glad that you and your two little dogs enjoyed our gardens and grounds. Town Tenement Farm really is a peaceful spot!
