We wanted to try the Ryokan experience, but not to share a bathroom / wc! Yatsusankan fitted the bill perfectly. Our lovely traditional room was spacious, with those all-important private 'facilities' for softies. Mr B enjoyed the public Onsen and luxuriated in the hot baths - followed by a complimentary glass of sake. The Kaiseki banquet in our private dining room was extensive, beautifully prepared and presented, flavoursome and occasionally 'challenging' to the western palate - but give everything a try! Similar comments apply to the breakfast. a western option is available for the early morning faint of heart.
All staff were wonderful. We have an abiding memory of being waved off by our hostess as we left - all the way down the road, over the river bridge and right to the other side. Wonderful.
Hida Furukawa is a lovely little town, only a short train ride from Takayama. Yatsusankan is a short walk from the station.
Highly recommended.

Yatsusankan has been serving their guest more than 100 years old and it is still doing their job amazingly good until now. The property is well maintained to keep its originality for Japanese tradiitonal ryokan. People at Yatsusankan is so polite, helpful and want to make us happy to stay at this ryokan.

We stayed at very huge, clean, comfortable room with in room bath and toilet. View is beautiful from our room with Hida Furukawa tradiitonal village and clean river.

There is community hall where we can enjoy the music and massage chair. Public bath is various and separate men and woman.

Best thing of staying at Yatsusankan is their Kaiseki dinner and breakfast with top notch local Hida cuisine.

As Ytasusankan guest, we requested for station pickup and transfer to station free of charge. One thing to note price isn't cheap but you get deservedly with what you pay for.

First trip to Japan and really wanted to feel the real experience. THIS IS IT. Mattress on floor after dinner. How fab to go out to dinner and come back to furniture moved and beds made up. Don’t be put off by sleeping on the floor on a mattress it’s fun when you have air con and a caring team of people ( so not quite as basic as you tell the family )
Food remember this will reflect true Japanese eating ie raw fish Hida beef etc. Again fab experience. Private dining rooms in Japan style or if you prefer table and chairs. If you want the best let them know what you want then your wishes will be granted.
The onsen baths are very authentic. Book it, if you want a true experience
Be aware there is a limited amount to do in the direct vicinity but a local train ( easy to use ) will take you to Takayama-Shi

From the outside it looks unpromising and is not in a particularly salubrious area but the moment you step inside Yatsusankan you know you’re in for a big treat. The decor is classically traditional, even opulent. Lots of wood everywhere especially in the old part of the hotel, and lots of artefacts dotted about to feast your eyes on. The subdued lighting imparts an intimate atmosphere. There is a very comfortable lounge to rest in downstairs along with a relaxation room with massage chairs and foot massagers and classical music playing in the background.

There are two private onsens, one stone and one wood for which a fee of JPY2000 is charged for an hour. There are also public men’s and women’s onsens available.

Our room overlooked the river and town beyond. It was very comfortable with all the usual things you would expect in a Japanese room - tea making facilities, TV, safe, etc. We had an ensure bathroom and separate WC. Although on the small side, the wet room with a square tub for a bath served its purpose even though rather dated in appearance.

The food was quite simply outstanding. The beautifully prepared and presented Kaiseki dinner turned out to be a great culinary experience. There were complimentary aperitifs before we were shown to our private dining room. The Japanese breakfast was excellent too.

The staff were superb and most helpful.

In sum, a truly great and traditional ryokan. We stayed in four ryokans on our latest trip and this was by far the best and most authentic. We would wholeheartedly recommend it.
