I have written a detailed review on my blog tristanaustin . com / blog / shimoda-yamatokan - Overall a nice stay, friendly staff and some good Onsen spas. Dining was also enjoyable. The view of the sunset is amazing from the hotel location.

I lived in Japan for about 18 years ,and one of my favorite place to spend my summer was Izu Shimoda .
Beautiful clean the weather was perfect for the whole year. The ocean always blue with cristaline water..
The local food nice and very cheap, the local farmers so kind as well. .
Missing Shimoda rigth now hope I will come back someday..
Sayonara for now ....

Booked this hotel prior to my arrival into Japan. Tried to book directly but had issues being out of country so I found a site "Agoda" very similar to U.S. online hotel sites. Couple of things you should know when booking many hotels in Japan. if you book on an on-line booking site, you are not treated the same as if you were to book directly. Not a bad thing overall since most times you can save money booking on some other sites. Here are some other helpful hints for this property.

1. It is a remote property without much within walking distance, but is only 10 minutes from the Shimoda Train Station by car.
2. The hotel provides a free shuttle from the train station: 2:30pm - 5:00pm, and a return shuttle from 9:00am to 11:30am. Otherwise it's about a $9.00 cab ride.
3. Free WIFi in the lobby area only, not in rooms.
4. There is only 1 restaurant in the hotel that only provides various set-course menus for breakfast and dinner. And, you need to make reservations for both.
5. If you don't buy a meal plan in the hotel which dinners run about $50.00 per person and up plus beverages (but well worth the money),you don't have any options but to get to the downtown area for any meals.
6 .All rooms have ocean views.
7. I believe that all rooms have private baths, but you really want to enjoy the bath they have on the 5th floor of the hotel (Fantastic View) from their outside soaking tubs. (Be Warned! both public and private bath houses DO NOT allow anyone with tattoos.) You may be asked to leave!
8. One last note about meal plan. if you don't have dinner reservations in the hotel, they will NOT lay out your bedding for that night. If you have dinner reservations, they will come in and layout your bedding.

Room tip: If you can, try to book package with meals included. Otherwise there is great dining outside of the hotel about $10.00-$12.00 cab ride.

Very very nice "hotel". It's in real japaneese style where you can wear yukatas and sleep on tatami mat. There are no beds. Rooms view sea view (perfect) with lots of surfers. Food delicious. Very wide choice and perfect service. There is also swimming pool and onsen with hot water.

This was our first stay at a ryokan, and we were beyond pleased. Our room was roomy and comfortable with amazing views of the ocean and beach. Dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious with beautiful presentation. The onsen was top notch as well. The outdoor onsen was spectacular, overlooking the beach. Of our two week trip through Japan this onsen was one of the highlights.
