Yes, there is some truth to all that's been written before about White Beach Hotel... but bottom lime, this is the best vacation we've had with the kids in 4 years of Japan. The location is just perfect, just a small road to cross to a beautiful beach. The atmosphere is incredibly relaxed and easy, the two large terraces with tables and sofas allowing for outdoor meals and cocktails, while the trampoline is taking care of the kids. The staff is attentive, willing to please, and going the extra mile to help. A couple of hiccups surely didn't spoil the fabulous time we had there.

Positive: Nice wood deck and 1 min walk to the beach (no beach views from the hotel).

Average: Hotel 100% furnished with Ikea furnitures (!!), felt actually like in the store: no geniune atmosphere.

Negative: Food was overpriced and not good. Service was bad (long time waiting for drinks and food, tables not cleaned from previous customers). Staff was helpful when asked but did not seem used to the job!
Rooms noisy due to the bar below. Rooms not cleaned every day (need to bring garbage down and constantly ask for things...).

I enjoyed my trip but thought it was too expensive (high season rate). Food is overpriced.
Only recommended for backpackers (with high byudget!!).
Will go to a different hotel by the beach next time.

A great place across a beautiful beach. Great for surfing and grabbing decent food after sightseeing. The atmosphere was casual, and the staff were very helpful. I found the rooms to be a bit small, but it was no big deal, for just a night. It would have been nice to have a fridge or internet in the room.

We stayed at White Beach during a very quiet period in September. Our children loved the tricycles, trampoline and other toys, and the very close proximity of the beautiful beach was a real benefit. The food was simple, yet very nice and served in large portions. The staff were extremely friendly, relaxed and accomodating.

The only downside that we experienced was that the bedroom and bathroom were too small and basic for a family of four, and did not represent good value for money. However, I have been told that there are plans to build family rooms in a new building - that would be a big plus.

Well, let us start with the Good : the location, the Ohama beach is reached after a gentle trotting of 27 seconds. The decked terrace is also quite nice. Toys are keeping the kids under control whereas parents are sipping fresh beers and cocktails.

The restaurant is not that bad if you have a volume of Dostoievsky's Karamazov Brothers to read waiting for rather simple dishes (snacking, salads, BBQ) albeit served in good quantities and temperature.

The Bad : small rooms, tiny plastic one-block bathroom (similar to the one of a typical Japanese business hotel at 5000JPY/night), no TV, no Yukata. At 20 000+ JPY, room only (no breakfeast/no lunch included), it is not a bargain.

The Ugly : at night, the walls of our room were trembling under the beats of subwoofers playing load music down the night (2AM). Our babies had Daftpunks' music (among others) as lullaby and a band of exited people yelling and laughing was equalizing the noise between two songs. It appears that a big birthday party gathering the whole gaijin Izu's community was organized and no one gave us this little detail in advance.

The spirit of the house seems to be club house first, hotel second. In our case, the owner appologized and gave us the night for free. I appreciated the gesture. Yet, unless I'm mistaken, the principle of an hotel is "pay a roof to sleep", not "stay awaken for free".

It's easy to see what the owners had in mind with the recent renovations, a gaijin-friendly boutique hotel with great location, food and atmosphere. However, it appears to be run more as a guest house with the owners and staff acting as if you're intruding into their living room and kitchen at times. They treat those guests they know as family- which is great if you are those guests; if you're not however, prepare to feel as though you are staying at someone's house party- uninvited and with a hefty bill.

Pros:
The deck space outside the bar was spacious, comfortable and a great place to enjoy a beer or snack.
The location can't be beat and they rent umbrellas for a reasonable 500JPY per day.
The bar is very lively at night with a good menu, music and prices.
English speakers abound.

Cons:
Bathrooms (bedroom and communal) would be more at home in a 1963 caravan.
The bar goes all hours of the night- and unless you do too the sound will go straight into your room.
Service was sporadic at best and cleanliness not great- a friend left with a multitude of unidentified bites from the futon, rooms are never made up, and you will have to ask for fresh towels (they ran out during our stay).
(Depending on your viewpoint, there were lots and lots of families with children. Very active children who like to freewheel on the multitude of toys the hotel has for them all over the deck.)
