We went to Joal Fadiout as part of a day excursion of Nouvelles Frontieres from Dakar. The excursion consisted of going to a Rural market in the morning and the Shell Island. I did this excursion as I wanted to see more of Senegal.

The Rural market was really interesting as this is where the local farmers sell their livestock such as goats, sheep, donkeys and horses. It also has a general market as well.

We went to Shell market in the afternoon. This island has two walkways, one to the island itself and another one to a joint Muslim and Christian cemetery. We had a guide who lived on the island, show us the island. The entire island is covered with shells and there lots of places where you can buy local crafts.

I really enjoyed this excursion as it gave me insight to the everyday life in Senegal.

A fairly unique and interesting place. Shell island is home to 4,000 people. 90% Christian, 10% Muslim. Living side by side. Worth a visit.

Island of made of shells with a small community of both Muslims and Christians; the mixed graveyard is worth a wander. Piroque rides are available to, from, and around the islands, but a nicer idea was a walk over the wooden bridge to the island, rambling over the main island to the graveyard island, and taking a pirogue back.

The island is connected to Joal town by a bridge that brings you into the magical atmosphere of Fadiouth.
Enjoy the silence in the cristian/muslim cemetery, still used today and placed just near a stunning laguna.
To be visited if in the nearby!

After paying for our tickets to visit Shell Island and the town of Fadiouth, we were assigned Paul, an English-speaking guide, who was very knowledgeable and certainly very personable. We took a "dug-out" (a rather long canoe) to the island but walked back to the mainland via the foot bridge. On the island, where there are millions (!) of shells is a fascinating cemetery, some artists, granaries and a church -- the guide made the point (repeatedly) about how well the Moslems and the Christians on the island respect each other and live side by side w/o problems or issues. This place was easily reached from Mbour/Saly where we were lodging for a couple of days.
