We shall remember this for ever as the “Tesco” of hotels where bread buns are sold as extras. We decided to break our journey home from a holiday in Wales with an overnight stay with my brother and his wife who were on holiday from Australia. We were travelling north and they were travelling south so I searched for a hotel that was about half way for both of us. Our initial impression was a little disappointing as the hotel is approached from the rear and looks rather 60’s tired. We had booked an executive double which when we eventually found it after a tedious wander through the labyrinth of narrow corridors and floors ( no lift) was just OK - though a shared balcony with noisy neighbours was not. The absence of wi fi was also a nuisance as I had to find my way back down to the public areas to get a signal which is chargeable after 30 minutes. My brother was less than pleased with their “superior” twin located behind a very inferior door. They attempted to upgrade but nothing was available . We booked for the evening meal – a set price of £25 for three courses. We were first offered bread rolls - a choice of either white or brown from a large basket full – I asked if I could have two but the quick response was “No Sir the allowance is 1 per person”. I was then told that I could, however, buy an extra one for £1.50 – the young waiter was obviously well trained in portion control. I declined the offer. A few minutes later he returned and announced that if we bought 8 bread rolls we could have them for 75p. I did not want to embarrass this young man who clearly had the best interests of his customers at heart but it was one of those moments when you could not help but laugh - it was just so utterly ridiculous. A monty python sketch comes to mind. One of our party ordered the cod which was subject to a hefty £8.50 supplement. When it arrived – he started eating it but it had obviously been overcooked and/or re heated as it was pretty inedible . When asked by a waitress if everything was alright the response was that it was ‘dreadful’ This was reported to a person we believed to be the restaurant manager and he apologised and offered to replace it. - This offer was declined and we were then told that no charge would be made. At the end of the meal I decided that I would like to enjoy a glass of dessert wine but this request was also refused as only whole bottles were available.
Whilst the staff were helpful (the receptionist kindly agreed to print a google maps route for us and a blanket provided instead of a duvet.) ) and pleasant enough it was altogether a very unsatisfactory and laughable experience and one which will not be repeated.

Went away for a weekends golf during March, The food ,service & accommodation were second to none.
The hotel itself looks a bit 'tired' on the outside could do with a lick of paint etc. but certainly makes up for it on the inside.

Room Tip: Plenty of bedclothes if required & bathroom toiletries etc.

Agree with most recent comments on hotel, it is a little tired and needs a refresh. stayed early April with twenty blokes on golf weekend. Room ok shower poor at best. Food was not bad but had to complain on the Friday night hence service on Saturday was up to scratch. Bar run out of lager at one stage and several spirits were not even replenished from the Friday night for the Saturday night session (good job we were versatile). Golf courses were in good nick for this time of year, however when the pro-shop cocked up the tee times on Saturday and doubled booked our society with another on the Hawkstone course the pro did a good job of imitating the invisible man, only a quiet chat with his assistant and our society agreeing to play the Championship course diverted a possible nasty situation. On the whole good golf dont expect much from the hotel.

Dear Guest,

thanks for the feedback, there are a few points on here to raise with the team as i was not aware of any over bookings as this is not possible to do on our system. Clearly though there has been a mistake and i am sorry that occurred. We are managing a program of external decorations some of which has been completed and there is further planned.

kind regards

Stayed at this hotel in a group of 8 golfers for a one night stay organised by Golbreaks during April 13. The hotel looks tired from the outside and much of the interior reflects this. Check in was good and efficient with pleasant, professional staff. We were accomodated in twin rooms in the annex. Our room was fine for our needs - short stay, somewhere to shower, change and sleep, except the shower was hopeless!

The bars and restaurant were adequate for groups of golfers and credit to the staff, they opened up a meeting room with large screen to watch the last round of the US Masters. The evening meal and breakfast were good, with a reasonable choice served by polite staff, unfortunately I was not impressed with the young waiter at breakfast who was tasked with replenishing the bread in the basket next to the toaster. Bare hands carried the bread from the kitchen and rearranged it at the toaster, having previously cleared and cleaned tables. No tongs in sight!

Not a hotel I would visit with my wife but as a location for a short golfing break - fine.

The highlight was the Hawkstone course, overlooked by the Hawkstone Follies, soaring sandstone cliffs - brilliant!

Room Tip: Ask for a room where the shower works!

I visited with my son for a golf break he was going on with a group, i walked round the golf course which was lovely the views spectacular.
The evening meals were lovely staff very friendly.Breakfast was ok nothing special as others said some of the food was barely warm and the toast took for ever to brown,

The room however left a lot to be desired it was bitterly cold looked more like an old holiday chalet from Butlins, the blind in the bathroom was blowing despite the windows been closed.
The heaters came on and off intermitenley so the room was always freezing.
I wouldnt stay here again which is a shame as it is in a lovely location.
