“nice place but lacks any atmosphere, food was poor”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

upon arriving it appeared a lovely old house. We were checked in promptly, the girl on the desk when we arrived was lovely. She also doubled as the barmaid and the waitress!

The room was a little disappointing for the price being billed as an executive double, very dated and small and with half a view over the immaculate garden and the other half overlooking a scruffy yard with building materials everywhere.

We had booked in for the evening meal, there was a distinct lack of people about. I am not sure we saw any other guests. In fact we were totally on our own for the whole meal, the food as others have mentioned was a major disappointment. Not only did it lack any flavour whatsoever it was also expensive. I get the impression it was not a chef cooking the food and the other guests were obviously at the local pub eating!

Would I return? not unless it was on special offer

We stayed here for 2 nights on a Living Social Deal which was great value. Staff were very friendly. A problem with the wardrobe door handle on check-in was fixed straight away. We ate in on the first night. Food was good. Unfortunately the restaurant was not open on the 2nd night (Sunday), although the manager did mention that we could order sandwiches at the bar. The room was tastefully furnished and comfortable, overlooking the front of the hotel. Wem itself doesn't have much going for it - mostly residential/light industrial, with a number of pubs and small shops/take-aways on the main street. The hotel is a good base for visiting Shrewsbury, which we really liked. There's also a very good farm shop (Battlefields) on the road from the hotel to Shrewsbury which we would recommend.

We stayed at the Old Rectory as part of a Living Social weekend Deal. We arrived early but our room wasn't ready yet so we went for a walk into Wem. The room was comfortable with a view of the rear gardens, (and the building site if you looked to the right!!!) Our evening meal was booked for 8 pm and we had to wait 25 minutes to get a menu or ask what drinks we wanted once we had been asked to wait in the bar. We were presented with special "Living Special" menu which was a two course Table D'Hote menu. In all honesty the menu wasn't great and to make matters worse, we were made to feel like "second class citizens" Others in the bar on the normal Restaurant menu were given nibbles with their drinks. Once we were seated the food was incredibly average at best and again not made to feel welcome by the manageress. For example, my wife had soup and the soup spoon came along with the soup on the plate with the soup bowl, if you were on the restaurant menu the soup spoon came separately ahead of the soup and was silver served to you, no difference there then!! The meal was very disappointing especially after I had read the sample menu on the website. After the meal we adjourned to the bar. We were the only ones in there and there was absolutely no atmosphere. If it wasn't for the Living Social offer, there would only have been 2 tables in the restaurant on the Friday night. The breakfast and hardworking staff are the saving grace for the Old Rectory. Breakfast is really good and has won breakfast awards on previous occasions. Full English with cereals, toast, tea and coffee plus you can choose what eggs you want as well. We didn't stay in for a meal on the Saturday night as the full restaurant menu had limited choice and was not good value for money. We went down the road to the Fox Inn in Wem, a fabulous pub with good food and a great atmosphere (see review for the Fox Inn). We were woken in the early hours of Sunday morning by the fire alarm going off. On going down the stairs i was told that it was a mistake by the night porter, (who also served breakfast on Sunday morning). When we checked out there was no mention and no apology regarding the fire alarm. We were also given a voucher giving the same deal if we booked again direct with the hotel in the Autumn. Don't think that we will be returning. The staff on reception and in the restaurant are fabulous, it's just a shame about the manageress.

Room Tip: We were in room 14 which was a ood room for a standard room, comfortable enough.

We had read all the reviews on Trip advisor so decided to book a couple of days here
We paid a High price for a room which to be honest underachieved our expectations
Staff were good,Food was good Cleanleness was Very good Room was comfortable But View from window was atrocious as we had specifically asked for a comfortable bed and a nice view from the room
I may be wrong here but please see photo and form your own opinion.
This would not be one of the hotels that would make our top twenty list and will not be going back here again

Room Tip: Dont book a room and request a nice view because you may get a view of a building site as we did a...

a large group of us booked for the new years eve party, excellent service ( a little slow ),fantastic dancing, we also stayed over in the bridal suite (it was NYE after all) wonderful room breakfast excellent lots of choice. I really wish they would renovate the rest of the outbuildings, as a local I think the community would benefit from a large function room, or spa in the area, because as it stands now its way too small for most weddings

Room Tip: don't choose a room over the kitchen, unless you like an early start

We stayed for a few days on our way home from Cornwall at the end of our family holiday. We were given a great deal which included breakfast, a three course Sunday lunch and a nice boat trip on the Sabrina in Shrewsbury.

The food was excellent and the rooms were to a very high standard indeed. We had an adjoining room for our (grown up) kids to stay in. All the staff were very friendly and helpful - particularly a young lady called Natalie!

All in all - a lovely end to our holiday at a great hotel with beautiful grounds. Thanks to all at the Old Rectory - we plan to be back sometime!

Room Tip: We had rooms 14 and 15 which were third floor up and had an adjoining door. Very nice rooms.

Lovely hotel and staff, superb food, and all in all great value. Cannot recommend the Old Rectory highly enough.
We spent a lovely weekend celebrating my wifes birthday in the peace and quiet enjoying superb food and being pampered by the attentive staff.
A day spent shopping in Shrewsbury could not even dampen my spirits.
Will definitely be returning as soon as we can both get some time off together.

Room Tip: We booked the half corona suite which overlooked the rear garden
