“One of my favorite places in the world”
Reviewed December 1, 2010

I have been lucky enough to stay at Villa Rothschild three times this year (January, March, and November), and I hold precious memories of each stay. The house is magnificent, in a beautiful and peaceful park setting that seems a million miles from nearby Frankfurt. A short walk takes you to the picturesque town of Koenigstein, with half-timbered houses and lovely shops and restaurants. Don't miss breakfast at the villa's restaurant, with personal service and superb choices in a beautiful, light-filled room.

All that is enough to set this property apart. But what has made it so special to me is the extraordinary friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Returning there is like going home. The staff has taken extra care to provide just the right accommodations for my husband, who has some disability. Such genuine kindness and consideration are heartwarming.

If you want a hotel with large staff, predictable rooms, and impersonal service, stay elsewhere. But if you want a unique, historic property in the Taunus woods, where you feel like you are stepping out of the rat race and back to another time, stay here. When I need a mental escape, my mind floats to Villa Rothschild. We'll be back in 2011.

Excellent small hotel, enjoy the view over Frankfurt from the bar and the outstanding service. All in all, definitely a recommendation. Food is sensational. Shuttle to gym is available. Some rooms do not have air condition, which is the only fault I could find. Had about ten nights here this year out of about 100 nights in hotels across Europe. Will come back.

Big room, very good bed, great wooden floors, excellent century old atmosphere, nice and cosy.
Ordered from the room service the best tomato soup and club sandwich ever.
Good breakfast after good sleep.

Our stay was short - arrived late and left early for our flight.
But enjoyed every bit of the stay.

Though situated in the village on the hills in tranquility, drive to the Franfurt airport was short - maybe 20 - 30 minutes in the morning rush hours. So good location.

This hotel has a spectacular facade but the rooms and service are even better. The restaurant is expensive but an experience not to be missed. We had an early morning flight from Frankfurt (about 30 minutes away) and despite it being 6 am on a Sunday, the staff moved heaven and earth to ensure we were well fed and had booked out with time to spare.

We stayed for 3 nights on our way home from a trip to Dresden
We had originally booked to stay by the |Rhine but the chosen hotel was very noisy so having found the Villa Rothschild through LHW we went to see it
The charming receptionist who spoke excellent English showed us 2 available rooms and offered us a special rate as they were not busy
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. All the staff were extremely helpful and charming and could not do enough to help us both with booking restaurants, massages and general sight seeing advice
We would most certainly return

We arrived to the hotel by dinner time. The bellboy helped with our luggage and check-in was fast. We had a specific Leaders' Club rate, including B&B and room-upgrade upon reservation. The receptionist however announced that we've been upgraded and that, as a wedding was going on, the room assigned to us faced the quieter (?) side of the villa. It was indeed quiet but the view from the dormer window was not very charming (there were also 2 Velux roof/gable skylights).
The room, correctly sized, was simply decorated in a functional rather than elegant style or any specific touch, with a small sofa and 2 armchairs that were upholstered with the same toile-de-Jouy as the curtain and the stores. Unfortunately, even drawn, the skylights' stores let daylight in, which favoured an early wake-up. The bed was comfortable. A full length mirror was missing.
The bathroom was small and functional (with a shower cabin only).
We were welcomed with a plate of pastry. I suppose we've been spoiled by other (Leading and other) hotels, who pamper their guests.

Dinner at the gourmet restaurant was nice (few choices, original cuisine, quite expensive), service was courteous and very lengthy. Breakfast was served in the same place, mostly a la carte, and again, courteous and unhurried service. Few tables were occupied.

The bar looked nice, and the park (on the side opposite our room) was lovely. Checkout was swift. The whole place somehow lacks a distinctive atmosphere. It's more functional than (even understated) luxurious or elegant. Definitely not what one would expect to feel at a country villa or a manor.

I started my trip to Villa Rothschild from the office with a collegue after a busy day at 8pm on October 26, 2008. We arrived at this Leading Small Hotel of the World at about 10pm after an exhausting ride on the motorway with rainy weather. At arrival there was no doorman or bellboy who noticed us. We parked the car in front of the entrance because the parking area was about 50m away and it was raining strongly. In the corridor were a few guests around joining a private birthday party but no staff, even at the reception desk. After a short wait a friendly receptionist appeaered and took care of us, the car and our luggage. We also were guided to our rooms. As a Leaders Club Member I got an upgrade to superior room 115 (rate was 210,-- Euro for one night booked via Leading Hotels, breakfast exclusive). The size of the room was about 30sqm, the size of my collegues room about 20sqm (my collegue did book the same rate through a travel agency and is not a Leaders Club member).

In the room was a small plate with a homemade dessert, no fruits or even a bottle of complimentary water. A Leaders Club present was missing (the mentioned small dessert was in the room of my collegue, too). At time of reservation I requested feather pillows which were not in the room at arrival although there was a card with a "pillow menu" lying on the bed, offering feather pillows... Unfortunately it was too late to change them in the night after returning from the restaurant. The bathroom was quite big but equipped with a shower stall, only. The standard lamp was out of order and missing details like direct links to restaurant or reception on the phone were missing (you had to search the directory to find out the number of the reception desk).

At check-in we asked the receptionist for a light meal or snack and the she recommended the bar for having a club sandwich or a salad. After returning from the room at about 10.20pm all seats in the bar were taken. There was no seating area in the small lobby, the only option was the gourmet restaurant where two tables were occupied. So I asked the waiter for having a table for a light meal in the retaurant. This was denied by the waiter - they serve from the gourmet card not from the bar card. As I told that there were no other seats available in all public areas of the hotel, he asked the team leader and suggested afterwards to have a snack in the room by using the room service! After complaining at recetion that there was no possibility for hotel guests to have a light meal outside the room they apologized and we finally got a table at the restaurant (where we had dinner from the bar card for 80 Euro).

Shoe shine was done correctly, a newspaper was delivered to the room in the night.

Check-out in the morning was complicated, too. I requested a bellboy for the luggage transfer and asked for my parked car. Unfortunately there was just one receptionist on duty who had to do the bellboy's job as well. So there was no staff at reception and another guest and I had to wait until the receptionist returned with the luggage from my room. After checking-out we had to wait again for the car. In that time other guests arrived for a meeting by taxi - their arrival also was not noticed, no staff around to tell them the location of the meeting room. Positive: the valet parking was free of charge.

All in all I don't recommend Villa Rothschild for business travellers or guests who are used to stay in upscaled properties. Service problems, a lack of staff and a missing can-do-attitude are quite annoying and time-consuming. The hotel itself is quite nice but with small standards rooms of 20sqm, no bathtubs even in superior rooms and a missing spa not what one expects when visiting a recently opened Leading Hotel ("Luxury sets them apart, Leading Hotels brings them together").
