The staff, breakfast, and construction style makes Austing Haus a solid performer. The owner's warmth and knowledge about the area made us feel comfortable. The location for the ski area is super convenient and the shuttle service they provide is essential during the busy times (e.g. spring break) when parking is at a premium. It's also easy to take longer drives into Taos for dinner since one doesn't have to drive to the ski area to get there. The negatives is the cleaning doesn't get past some vacuuming and making of the bed. If the owners would emphasize better cleaning service this B&B would be a 5/5.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a fireplace and loft--they are more private.

Austing House and employees are what you would hope to find . After a long day on the road or of skiing the property is quiet and relaxing . They have a full breakfast, good parking, a great shuttle service to slopes and they welcome small dogs under twenty pounds. The shuttle makes it possible for everyone in your group to come and go as they please, eliminates having to find parking at slopes.
You will need to know that the phone service in the area (entire Taos ski valley) is terrible, especially for us AT&T users. This can be important, for families that rely on cell phones to find each other during day on slopes. I suggest a phone app for AT&T users called Mark The Spot to put dropped and lost calls and text. However Austing House has free WIFI, and there is a great restaurant that delivers.
The rooms are very basic, yet the rooms are clean and have plenty of hot water, cable and are near to several small good restaurants. This property has a very interesting architectural history For a beautiful view of mountains, warm breakfast, a great day of skiing, a good place to rest, eat ,and be ready for the next day, Austing House B&B feels like vacation.

Room Tip: If you have children ask about loft

We booked Austing Haus based on availability, pricing and reviews posted on the internet. We stayed for 4 nights from Dec 27 to Dec 31 - likely the busiest time of the year. First time I had called about a reservation, I spoke to Sarah - she was very nice and accepted our request to hold the rooms while I got some breathing room to make the decision. She was also very helpful and forthright about the location, food options and other activities. The pricing was the lowest (when compared to all other options). They also did not have the minimum night stay requirements that other hotels in the area required from us. Since this location is not right next door to the lifts, they provide a very convenient shuttle service (very accommodating for special requests). AH is located about 1.5 miles/5 mins to the lift s and is right on the road to the Taos Ski Valley - so very convenient that way.

We stayed in the room with the loft. The kids had a blast going up n down. The loft is spacious. The AH is a slightly old facility, so I would not expect state of the art fixtures. They have a fabulous breakfast room with decent breakfast and really friendly service. In fact, the family of the owners was helping out and they made us feel at home.

Special mention:
- We had our daughter spill nail polish all over the carpet in the loft and were concerned about the cost of getting the damage fixed. The owner promptly came over, brought nail polish remover, stain remover and scrubbed off the whole thing (he spent > 30 mins after 9pm to get this done). Really nice of him to do this and he made sure that there are no additional charges
- They let us use the laundry rooms for personal use

Pros:
- Super nice people
- Nice old feel to the place
- Excellent people (best part of our stay)

Cons:
- The bathrooms can do with a bit of a face-lift
- Would be nice to have a bit better TV and a few more channels

Conclusion:
We've been to Taos a couple times and there is no question we will go back again. And we will stay at no place other than Austing Haus!

Room Tip: Loft rooms come with a spacious loft and kids will love it. The downside could be that the lower room might have less floor space. If you have a lot of luggage, might be easier to choose a room on the first floor.

This place is cozy and perfect for a long weekend. The staff is beyond accommodating and shuttle you back and forth upon request- Joe made sure we were always taken care of! Good warm breakfast every morning and good ski packages for reasonable prices. Overall a great experience and we highly recommend it!

The Austing Haus has a wonderful quaint charm. We stayed the last few days of 2011 and being fairly cold (at almost 12,000 feet) we enjoyed our fireplace room everyday! Our dog enjoyed it too - we appreciate "pet friendly" places very much. Each day started off with a really good breakfast in a very nice dining room - beautiful stained glass all around. The eggs and meat were different daily and you could cook your own waffle - GREAT COFFEE! Internet is available (great for those who need to check in with their businesses) and cell phones worked in most areas. TV is somewhat limited, but hey, that's not what you're there for - just have the kids bring their interactive toys and they'll be fine. When possible, we'll be back!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a fireplace.
