Owner description: Located at the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains in Northern New Mexico, Taos Ski Valley is a world famous destination for riders and skiers of all ability levels. Taos is primarily know for its steeps but offers beginner & intermediate trails off the top of every single chair lift. For the advanced to expert skier/rider Taos offers some of the most challenging and varied terrain in the country, especially off its hike to ridges. The family vibe is also embodied in the quaint village of Taos Ski Valley. Not overdeveloped the resort offers a simple night life, lots of dining options, with everything in close proximity. If you are looking for more than skiing/riding check out the historic town of Taos just 18 miles down the road for a true vacation destination.

“Best Summer Time get-a-way!”

What a great place to hide out during the summer months; reduced rates, good food, horseback riding, excellent hiking, chairlift rides and only 20 minutes from downtown Taos, Rio Grande Gorge, balloon rides and more!

“If this is on your list of possible ski trips and you go somewhere else you made a mistake.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2014

I have been coming to Taos Ski Valley for 8 years and have done 9 ski better weeks with the ski school. And I have skied at Vail, Jackson, Beaver Creek, Deer Valley, Park City, Snowbird and Alta, and lots of places in the East. But I can without hesitation say that Taos has terrain as good as or better than all of the other places. And, the terrain is spread out so you don't get the local jokers dropping in on you all over the place like Alta. You may have to hike to some of the more interesting stuff, but there is plenty of super steep stuff that does not require a hike. Taos may not get as many 20" fresh powder days as some of the places in Utah, but when it does dump it does not get skied up within 3 hours like some of those other places.

Two other things make Taos also stand out. First - the ski school is THE BEST in the country. If you are really serious about getting to the point where you can ski anything in any conditions then you have to come to Taos and do the ski better weeks. This place has some of the most challenging in bounds terrain of any place I have skied, and they will teach you how to ski it. And, it is very reasonable, particularly if you have a Taos card. Plus its like having a private guide show all around the mountain and take you to the best snow. Second, the town of Taos is very cool. It does not have any night clubs (maybe at the Taos Pueblo Casino - but I have not been) but there are lots of very good restaurants and neat art and other galleries.

And, there is one other thing that makes Taos Ski Valley so good - the people. Both the locals and the visitors are nice. That is not what you get at some other areas.

“Last of it's kind!”

Taos ski resort is big with plenty of terrain to satisfy anybody (greens, blues, blacks, and expert terrain). It doesn't have any high speed lifts (yet) but the ones it does have are in good shape and plenty good enough. I think the family that has owned the resort for the last 60 years recently sold it so I expect lots of money will be poured into it and prices will go sky high. But for know it's a nice mix of not too expensive and glitzy and some really good skiing. We spend a day there and skied most of the terrain although we did not do any of the hike-to terrain which looked awesome. The snow conditions were excellent, especially for April. There are a couple of places to eat lunch on the mountain if you so desire and they weren't crowded, at least not in April. One thing I did notice is that you can ski back to the base from the bottom of any of the lifts. While there is lodging at the resort I think quite a few people stay in town and drive to the mountain as we did. Great skiing at decent prices.

“Great Hill- the BEST instructors”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2014

I would HIGHLY recommend this hill for nearly EVERYONE!
If your an expert, they have runs that will challenge and wear you out!
If you or your family want to learn to ski, these instructors are by far the best we have seen!
We booked a private lesson for two intermediate adult skiers and a ten year old on his second ski trip.
We were not sure how it was going to go..Our instructor CARL S. was AWESOME!!!! but BE WARNED: if you get lessons from a TAOS INSTRUCTOR you will be tired and by the end of the day the kid who is new to skiing, will be kicking your butt!!!!!!!
After a day with Carl, we went to Red River and Angel fire, and all of us were skiing some blacks with confidence.
We are already making plans to book a lesson with Carl again next year..........

The lift operators pay attention and are helpful, ski patrol is always somewhere on the mountain if you need them, and most skiers AND SNOWBOARDERS were courteous....
