My wife and I were booked by an agency at the Opawa Homestead while we were on tour in New Zealand. My wife, up to her ears in memories of sheep from her native Scotland, stated that I should have it changed. Despite my best efforts, the agency came back that there were no other B&Bs in the area and certainly no hotels. And so, it was with trepadition that we drove down the country road, onto an unsealed stretch and then into the driveway. However, the grounds were magnificent and the view endless as it stretched over pastures and hills to the distant mountains. Two very friendly dogs, whose names escape me, "guard" the property and happily mug anyone who gets close!
Within five minutes my wife was, as was I, entranced with both Julie, the owner, and her young daughter, who quickly became the surrogate for the granddaughter back home that she missed so much as we traveled.
After being shown around downstairs Julie took us upstairs to our "quarters" which was the bridal suite. Big bed, very comfortable, with a canopy overlooking the in-room bathtub and a view to the distant mountains! Julie was taking some sheep just down the lane to be sheared and invited me to go along. I accepted and got some great shearing shots! When I returned my wife was deep into several magazine articles about how Julie took over the historic building from a former large sheep station and converted it into a beautiful B&B with four guest sleeping rooms upstairs.
Overnight visitors here get dinner since it is many kilometers away to a restaurant. Julie prepared an execellent meal and my wife and I sat at the formal dining table to enjoy it. Next morning we had a light breakfast at the same table.
On our departure morning we reluctantly drove away filled with many happy memories of our brief time spent at Opawa Homestead!
We highly recommend both the comfort of the property, the spectacular views and the pleasant company of Julie and her daughter.
