We needed a break from the humdrum and headed out - via a travelnews Namibia review - to Evening Shade self-catering and Main Street Cafe in Omaruru. What a great surprise! The rooms are definitely modern and deluxe, great quality for a great price. The artist flair and quirky charms of this establishment really make it a special spot where we will return to time and time again. The Cafe is on the main road and we were treated to B&B delights with poached eggs and handmade seed loaf to name but a few. The Cafe had a *****Burger Night on the Saturday which is well worth the trip on its own! Freshly made patties, buns and all the toppings locally sourced and made, with a friendly neighbourhood vibe and flowing red wine to top it all off. I definitely recommend this one and check out the Photograhy studio too, we left with a few artworks, warm hearts and well rested souls!

The café is quite modern and the décor quite appealing but it seemed a bit cold, probably because the place was completely empty. The coffee machine was out of order which was a bit disappointing, but not the end of the world. They don't have a menu just a change of freshly made meals every day, which in a way is good because you know what you're getting is fresh, but those who want a bit of variety might get a bit frustrated with the few options, unless you want cake. We had some cake, which was very good, but we still don't know what kind of cake it was as nobody could tell us what kinds of cakes were in the display. Maybe we were just there at the wrong time of day, but the lack of people and atmosphere was a bit of a let down. I understand it's a new business and I probably will go back to compare my previous experience.

Dear Seashorehappiness,

I have carefully read your review and can offer the following. The current team is still new at the job, we took over the restaurant from the previous owner about 6 weeks ago, so we are still finding our way in many aspects of the operation. I have been largely away from the restaurant for the last month or so, as I am the official photographer for Miss Namibia, so issues with the lack of information on the cake is my fault. I have addressed this with staff and hopefully it is an occurrence that wont be repeated.

As for the limited menu, that is by design. most small town restaurants in Namibia have lengthy menus that cannot possibly be fresh. Everything we prepare is dependent on sourcing locally available ingredients that vary every week. We make our own cheese from local milk, use local meat, beef, pork, chicken, no game, local vegetables, our eggs are free range from the center of the Erongo Mountains. We bake our own bread almost every day.

Our mission is to serve up good honest, homemade food, promptly in a spotlessly clean restaurant. If there is ever anything someone wants that doesn't seem to be on the menu, then all they need do is ask and we will do everything we can to accommodate their wishes.

Thank you for visiting our café and I do hope that should you pass this way again you will give us another chance.

kind regards,

Chris Johnston

I still dream of the Honey thyme roasted-Pear upside-down cake, the sandwiches made with freshly baked bread: roasted peppers, ricotta and caper with smoked chicken or kudu. Ooh, and that butternut cheesecake! Sigh...
Those puddings... We tried to travel far North in Namibia but those to-die-for puddings pulled us back again and again to Omaruru.
The food is beyond delicious, the setting delightful, and the prices very sweet. I reckon Main Street Cafe, Omaruru, is going to become one of the top 25 culinary destinations of the world.
And the town's worth a sojourn too.
Cute old german architecture, either side of a wide river bed, all set about with Anna trees. Delicious flavour of Ancient Africa.
There's exquisite Self- catering Accommodation at Evening Shade, just behind the Main Cafe. And a visual gourmet available in the photographic studio that joins onto Main Street cafe. Photo's are by the quirky and passionate baker who owns Main cafe.
(He lives behind the Cafe, in what was the original Omaruru Bakery, which baked biscuits my grandparents used to travel across the land to eat)

Thank you so much for your kind words. Main Street Café has a very simple business model, good honest food, change it all the time, puddings the you will love and your Doctor will hate, great service, spotlessly clean, laugh a lot.

From the obvious indescribable tastes, the ineresting ways in which these were created, the ambience that is fresh, new and homey and the open arms with which your are welcomed, this Café is like a coming home to a childhood memory of good food, good company and a general good time.

Looking forward to my experience...
