“Another great holiday village”
Reviewed September 3, 2013 via mobile

Been back from HV Kos for a few days now, and we all wish we were still there.

We stayed for 10 nights as usual.

Check-in

The check in was really well done, we were at reception for literally 5 minutes before we were off to the room, we got there about 10 ish and there were sandwiches laid on for us, you could also have gone into the after dusk bar at reception and started on your all inclusive drinks experience, but were keen to get to the room and settle in.

The Room

Our (family) room was well appointed with a king size bed and two singles, separated by a solid wall and a door, so really 2 rooms, also there was a TV in each room, something we hadn't seen in previous HV visits, and meant the kids could watch movies for men in their own room.

We had no problem with the size, some would call it small, but it was all we needed. The bathroom was good with a nice hot shower and a large basin.

Cleaning was OK, although if there wasn't obvious dirt in the floor it wasn't mopped, which meant with 2 ladies doing their hair it could often be found on the floor after being cleaned.

The village

As usual at HV we loved the food, so much choice that you ended up trying most of it, the kids did too and they are usually quite picky.

The pools were nice and quite close together, we spent most of our time at the Activity pool, but had no problems with our kids going off to the other pools with their friends due to their close proximity.

The activities and clubs were brilliant the daytime entertainments team were surpassed only by the evening entertainment team of Dave, Sarah, Ted and Sophie who kept the kids and adults entertained all night. Thanks you guys.

The drinks were the normal local produce which means you had trouble giving yourself a hangover, which is a good thing I suppose. I would recommend taking a plastic pint pot if you like your Beer, otherwise it will be a small plastic beaker that has gone by the time you are back in your sunbed.

We only did 1 excursion, which was the Aegean Cruise, we really enjoyed it and had a great day.

Sun beds.....

The only nark we had was sunbeds, there were plenty at the pools, but for some reason people still got up really early (before 6am) to plonk their towels down..... In the end it was a case of if you can't beat them, join them.

Had a great time, now busy looking at our next HV trip, maybe Ibiza...

Our family of 4 (kids aged 6 & 7) visited in the last week of August.

ROOM

Our room was 515 - 3rd floor of a 3 storey building at the back of the hotel. Even though it was one of the edge of the hotel grounds, it was still only a few minutes walk to everything. The room was fairly small but enough room. On entering there was a small, but clean and modern wet-room style bathroom on the left, with a room with twin beds straight ahead. This led in to a another bedroom with a superking bed (up 2 steps). The rooms were separated by a sold wall partition, with a large window that let in light into the bedroom. The beds were extremely comfortable - and the twin beds were beds and none of the rubbish sofa-bed sleep-destroyer nonsense that the Spanish have a passion for. The room has been refurbished and was clean, attractive with 2 flat screen TVs (not that we watched them). The balcony was small but adequate.

FOOD

The food was buffet style in a large restaurant, where you could choose to sit inside or outside. I personally thought the food was very good, although the 'themed nights' were not as varied or imaginative as other holiday villages. The fresh fruit and salad displays were great. Wine, beer and soft drinks were self-serve. There was a children's corner, where chicken nuggets, pasta and chips were staples. There were also a couple of other a la carte restaurants that you could book but we didn't bother as the main restaurant was fine (and you weren't stuck to a particular time).

POOLS

Pools are good. Water temperature was lush - but there again it was August! The activity pool is where all the action goes on - swimming lesson, kids clubs pool-based activities, water polo etc and where the entertainment team based themselves. There was a good splash pool for the kids, a free-form main pool which was the strangest pool shape I have ever seen, and a quiet pool which we never visited.

The one thing that really lets this property down is the severe lack of sunbeds. Figures we heard from guests was 300 beds for a hotel capacity of 800. There was plenty of room to put more around hotel and I am at a loss why they don't. If you didn't get to the pool by 7ish, forget it. And if you wanted a 'premium' spot then you needed to claim them by 5.30am or earlier. This is why this hotel has scored a 4 from me and not a 5.

BARS/DRINKS

The local beer and wine offered was OK, and the soft drinks were Pepsi and other decent brands. They also offered quite a few different cocktails. A first for us in an AI holiday was the free availability of bottles of water. There were a few bars and also several self-serve areas which was great. Despite being peak season, we rarely had to queue - and even then service was swift.

STAFF

The hotel staff were nothing short of excellent. Friendly, efficient, smiley and lovely. The First Choice team were a bit variable: some of the kid's club ladies were a bit jaded and lack-lustre but the majority were great. Adam and Ash deserve a particular mention as they put in so much effort with the kids and were brilliant with them. The entertainment team were good - Teddy was fab and I have never seen so many 'wobblers' doing Aqua Fit in the morning at a holiday village! In terms of reps, we had the occasion to deal with them on a few occasions and they were great, in particular Lauren.

OTHER FACILITIES

Beach was small, clean but nice and plenty of sunbeds. The sea temp was amazing!

The ropes course was the best I have seen in a holiday village - fantastic.

The entertainment venue was OK - amphitheatre style. I didn't think it was as dangerous as other reviewers, but certainly once you were in, you were in and it was a pain to squeeze past other guests to get out. Taking drinks there was not really possible as there was nowhere to put them.

The thing I liked very much about this hotel is that all the activities and pools were fairly central so there was always a good buzz around the place.

Trips - we did the pirate cruise (great for the kids) and Lido water park. Recommend both.

OVERALL

Having visited holiday villages in Lanzarote, Cyprus and Egypt, I can assure you that this place scores amongst the best. A previous reviewer stated that they thought Cyprus was better but I disagree - they are on a par.

If you do not have a family with kids, then this is not the place for you. However, if you do want a fun-filled, activity packed holiday that will keep the grown-ups and kids entertained, you can't go wrong with a holiday village. Keep up the good work guys!

This was our first Holiday Village experience. Our son is 3.5, and had lots to do.

Rooms- rooms were clean and we regularly had clean towels put into rooms. The free air conditioning was very necessary.

Food- the food was good, the buffet restaurant was enough choice for us for a week but would think that more than a week would become a little boring. The Greek and American themed restaurants are a must. Very good, especially the Greek.

Location- we didn't really leave the hotel, only to visit the beach, but there was plenty of excursions and things to keep you busy. Nice quick transfer.

Kids Clubs- 3-5Lilttle Stars- they provide a great service. On occasion our soon was quite teary (to be left) but they were very accommodating and caring. There was a lot to choose from. Definitely worth using- gives you the little break needed and somewhere cool for the children to go and be entertained. Especially evening sessions 9-11pm.

Pools/playground- all good especially the Splash Pool if your child is confident in water. Playground ideal, especially come the evening when a lot cooler.

Kos Airport-very basic and manic. Don't expect much!

For colder bottles of water visit the bar located at the back of hotel( where you collect towels from).

Sun beds-not a major problem as long as you are prepared to go and put a towel in them by 8am the very latest!

First time at a Holiday Village...

Location fab, lovely island, wall to wall sunshine and loads to do outside of the resort which is worth venturing out for....waterpark nearby great fun, and 3 island trip relaxing. First Choice prices for trips a lot more expensive than if you trot off for a 10 minute walk to Marmari and book them through the travel office there...saved a couple of hundred euros doing that, and you clearly get a nice walk along the beach at the same time, so everyone's a winner...

As for the hotel...
Not going to dwell on room, think other reviews cover it, highly recommend sliding partition though. Food plentiful and good choice, just make sure you find out what time restaurants are open when you get there as we didn't, and having arrived at silly o'clock in the morning missed breakfast the next day...! But hey, the snack bar then opens at 10.30 so there's really no reason to think you're going to starve even if you miss one restaurant. Rolls and water there when we arrived at 3.30am, I'm guessing people moaning that there weren't any had been addressed by the time we arrived.

There does seem to be a common theme running through these reviews regarding the sunbeds...I would agree, it was ridiculous the time of day that people seemed to get up to book themselves a slot by the pool...personally, we stayed well away from them, there's really no need to park yourselves in an overcrowded spot for the day when there's so much there to do, and with the beach just outside the hotel with plenty of available sunbeds, seriously, if you just want to lay down and chill for the day, that's the place to go. Saying that, if your children are spending time in kid's club, you're not allowed to be on the beach, so clearly the only other alternative is to join in...!

The kid's club and ents staff work amazingly hard, so patient and really get to know your children and are friendly enthusiastic and fun despite the high temp and long hours they do....thanks to all you guys for that. Having been slightly concerned when we arrived after the reps welcome meeting that we had arrived in a hi-de-hi-campers nightmare, this soon proved to be a very unjust first impression, and suffice to say the fact that both my children (aged 13 and 11) were sobbing on their last evening, in itself says it all. The activities and the staff running them really made the holiday for us...please don't be put off by some of the more negative reviews. You get out what you put in in a place like this, and it's well worth the effort to join in.

Thanks to all the team there, but special thanks on behalf of our family to Lajos in the restaurant, who always goes a bit further for you, and Tom, Sarah E, Pete, Carey, Adam, Jade F and Ash for giving my boys the best hol, and Chelsea and Pete for your patience with me on the high ropes....

As you guys say... "Nicely done".

Room Tip: Room with sliding partition well worth paying a bit more for.

This was our first experience of a HV, and it was a very enjoyable experience, my two boys aged 11 and 13 probably had there best ever holiday!
At just over 5k for two weeks what do you get for your money? The room 3 1/2* at best, cleanliness not the best and a bit crampt, especially in the bathroom for 4, but your not there for the room, when the weather is nothing short of perfect every day!
Food, was good, the main restaurant had lots of choice, with different themes, drinks from the machines could be a bit hit and miss, the service was ok, the furniture was a bit Butlins, and if you expect any kind of waiter service your in the wrong place.
We booked the American diner one night, waste of time, food not really great!
Lots of places to get drinks all over the resort and never more than 2 people in a queue!
If you have 2 children that loved the kids clubs, the inspirational staff, the good facilities, then the price is certainly worth it.
All the entertainment and kids club team were superb, very organised, highly motivated and really made the holiday for us all, from the encouragement given to my wife on the high ropes!! to the chocolate parties, and the endless water sports.
Always happy to talk with children and parents alike, whether dressed as a clown or waiting to get home after a long day!
Adults could choose to take part in activities or chill by the pool, it wasn't forced down your throat, and all activities were aimed at the level of the competitors.
The evening entertainment wasn't really my thing, but based on the numbers that were watching every night it was very popular, and again a great effort by the staff.
If anyone wonders how 'cults' are started then just watch everyone do the 'chocolate^' !!

The beach over the road was good, quite narrow, but the sea was warm and shallow, and loads of sun beds here for those of us who don't get up at 6 am to reserve them!
A simple bit of hotel security would stop this, if your not on your sun bed at 1pm just take away all the towels....simplez!

We did the three trips, the water park was excellent and really quiet, with activities for all ages and bravery levels!
The three Island cruise was good fun, well organised, and a chance for some decent snorkelling.
The volcano Island was very good, and very hot, we had an excellent English guide called Michael and he made the trip.
We booked all our trips at Tigarki tours in Marmari, at least a third off the prices in the hotel for the same trips, well worth it.
The bus into Kos for 2 euros is good, Kos is a nice town, with plenty of people trying to get you to spend your euros at one of the Tavernas.
If your a bit of a history buff, then the ancient ruins are some of the best in Europe, although its a bit of a thrill its also a shame to be able to walk over two thousand year old mosaics!

Would I go to a holiday village again?........ quite possibly!

We had a very enjoyable week at the holiday village in Kos. We travelled with our 3 year old who loved the kids club (the staff work so hard to keep the kids entertained - they deserve medals!) and the choice of food was good - a bit repetitive by the end of the week, but that's all inclusive holidays for you. Watch out for the hot plates though - some are quite low down and easily reached by little hands. There are plenty of signs around the restaurant warning that they are hot, but as small children can't read you really do have to keep a close eye on them to make sure they don't reach up to try and grab things. Our daughter managed to burn her fingers and we also saw it happen to quite a few other children in the week we were there.

We spent most of our time around the quiet pool which suited us - but there are lots of other pools if you prefer it a bit more lively. The evening entertainment wasn't great - but the staff did try very hard. We went just before the school holidays and the I-5-live shows aren't really that well suited to pre-schoolers. Sure it would have been much easier for the staff to just put on a party CD and dance with the kids. That said, I am sure in the school holidays when the older children are there, there would be a lot more participation in the games - which were all just a bit too old for the 2-5 year olds that were there when we visited.

The rooms were nice and well maintained with really comfy beds. Our only issue was with first choice who allocated us to the wrong room type - not the room we believed we had booked which should have had a separate sleeping area for our daughter. As the hotel was full the week that we went, the hotel found it impossible to move us - so we spent the week in an open plan room with our daughter sleeping right next to us. Not exactly the holiday we planned - but that said the room was nice enough.

For the first time ever on holiday we didn't leave the hotel complex - there is so much to keep you entertained there was no need to. A very enjoyable week and we would return again.

Being big lovers of Greece, we were really excited to be going away for the first time all inclusive! With a 1yr old and a 5yr old we thought it would be a god send to have all activities, food and drink already paid for (or at least almost all)! We found it a little disappointing to be honest! Staying for the first 2 weeks of the season, we found we had little niggles with the room and complex where things were just not ready! Nothing to spoil the holiday but a niggle all the same!!
The reception were not really bothered and reps were a bit the same! That said the entertainment staff and kids club reps were well above average and clearly worked very hard to ensure a good time was had by all the children! The evening entertainment team were great and a big shout out to Anna Banana as you kept everyone enthusiastic and we loved Russell the Brussel!!
Food was fine and lots of choice, just a personal preference was that it just wasn't for us, going up in stints with 2 children! Just wouldn't bother with the special booked sessions in the 'restaurants' as just the same food served with a bit extra salad!
Although for adults we much prefer a self catering break where we can choose where to eat and where to explore, we understand that we booked this holiday for our children and they absolutely adored it from start to finish! If you are fans of all inc, we would say this is the place to be and I am sure that our niggles with room and complex were more down to teething problems than ongoing problems! We have booked to go back to Alykanas Thomson Family Resort next year as it offers everything Greek that we adore! We just felt this complex could have been anywhere in the world which was a negative for us!
