“Renovated rooms are excellent”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

To our (pleasant) surprise we were placed in a room that was almost new, and finished to a very high standard (photos below). As three adults it was very spacious - two bedrooms connected by a small kitchenette area, with the bathroom leading off it, and a balcony with sea views.

Staff are very friendly and efficient. Unfortunately it seems that the manager is very controlling - staff aren't allowed to give out beach towels without his permission, but in fairness he is usually around keeping an eye on everything. Some corners are cut to save money - whilst we had nice fluffy towels when we arrived, by days 3, 4 & 5 we had very old thin towels. At breakfast we were told that if we wanted honey and/or yoghurt we had to pay extra. Likewise, if you want to use air conditioning you have to pay a 5 euro daily supplement per unit - not expensive, but why not just increase the cost of the room by 5/10 euros instead? The beds have also been bought to last - they are probably the hardest we've ever slept on.

We chose Cavo D'Oro as it is one of the few small good value beachfront hotels where you can see the sea and sunset but are not overrun with tourists. Whilst you can't escape the tourists on Kos, this was relatively quiet as a hotel - we were never troubled by noise from any of the other guests. Marmari is somewhat out of the way so you should really hire a car to make the most of the island.

Once the renovation is complete I would recommend this as an excellent alternative to the bland international hotels that spoil some parts of Kos.

We stayed at the Cavo d'Oro for 5 nights in mid Sept 2013 as we wanted a smaller hotel convenient but not too close to busy Cos town. It gets a number of German package tours and the residents were mainly young families and older couples so it was quiet. We booked a one room apartment but on arrival found that it had been converted into two double bedrooms separated by a small kitchen and bathroom. The manager said it was one of two rooms they have upgraded to test out the format before starting an upgrade on the rest of the rooms this winter. The style was simple modern and very attractive. This hotel is surrounded by gardens and trees and you walk down though the garden to a good sandy beach which was not crowded, unlike many around Cos town. The place is efficiently and pleasantly run and our only real complaint is the boring breakfast which lacks fruit and yoghurt unless you paid extra. We only take a continental breakfast but there was cheese & ham, omelettes etc if you want a bigger breakfast. Like most hotels along the north coast you need a car to see the island.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgraded room.

I want to stress that this review is based only for one hour visit, so it doesn't reflect all services and facilities of this hotel. We got a room that was smelly and had dirty and patched bed linen. Furniture was worn. After a discussion with management they allowed cancellation without cancellation fee and we walked away with our luggage not knowing where to go, hungry, angry and disappointed. It's obvious that the management lives in fantasy land as they overrode our arguments by referring to their status in trip advisor, ie. they believe more the past reviews in internet than a customer standing in front of them. I really hope the management learns from this, at least removes the plastic flowers (always a bad sign) because the location is good and the hotel looks good from outside. It's only a matter of time when they lose central european guests but maybe that is their strategy. I hope the management opens their eyes and improves. Hope this helps both the hotel and central european tourists.

With a view past the Livingstone Palm Gardens, the scent of Oleander and wild Herbs, an orange/ red sun melting over the Island of Kalimnos, Cicadas orchestrating in the background as a Full moon rises into a cobalt hue sky.
A quaint smug family run Hotel on the shores of Marmari, this Hotel was a pleasant and very splendid vacation.
No mass Tourism, 21 rooms, simple and smug,
We where welcomed by friendly and heart-warming staff, a family run, with lots of charm, a place where the Greek Gods would stay if they where to come back to...

The Food, on every single occasion of our 10 day stay was without saying the best Greek Food we have eaten, the Hotel's own vegetable farm and fresh eggs from their own hatchery, it doesn't get better then that! The Grill platters and Greek Appetizer platters Dimitris would magically create, where fit for gods.

This Hotel is worth every cent, the value for the quality of customer service, hospitality, cleanliness, food and beverage is absolutely worth.

If you are looking for a relaxed chill out time, with no hustle and bustle, no load animation teams, no all inclusive mass eatery's, then you have found the perfect place to unwind, trust me on this one.

It is home, away from home.

Room Tip: The Sutidorooms have Beach/ Palm Plantation views
