Review of Tar Tunnel

Tar Tunnel
Reviewed August 18, 2013

Basic attraction really.

Just a tunnel with a couple of pools of tar and tar dripping from the ceiling. Hard hats provided.

More info from the boards in the little gift shop than from the tunnel itself.

The canal and railed carts outside were interesting. Visited as part of the Ironbridge Passport Ticket.

Very interesting tunnel in the Ironbridge gorge. One of 10 museums in the area. Really worth a visit. Close by is Blist Hill Victorian town which is a other excellent place to spend a day.

We visited as part of a day trip to Ironbridge and it is well worth a visit as part of a day trip to Ironbridge.
We wore hard hats and were very careful not to brush against the walls of the tunnel!
We would recommend buying a passport ticket.

I accept that this might leave some stone cold, but I loved it. It is after all nothing more than a rather low tunnel along which you can see deposits of the only natually occuring deposit of bitumen in the British Isles. However, from the moment you put on the provided yellow hard hat and get that first whiff of tar as you crouch to enter the tunnel itself, it's a complete bag of fun, as well as being history up close and personal and just a great way lose half an hour. If you park at the Coalport Museum you can get there by walking along the canal, which I suspect is a lot prettier now than it was when the factory was in full production and then by crossing the equally impressive Hay Incline boat lift. If you are spending a day in Ironbridge, do try and make time to go here: if nothing else it's a chance to briefly cool down on a hot summer's day.

A fascinating little attraction in the Ironbridge museums collection. A bit uncomfortable if you are tall, as the roof is very low, but very atmospheric and slightly chilling. Be careful not to brush your clothes against the oozing bitumen on the walls!
