“A great choice in Donsol”
Reviewed July 3, 2012

We were very happy with Elysia. The staff was very helpful and responsive with booking, the location is walking distance from where you go for the whale sharks, the rooms are simple but very clean, the resort is small but has lots of places to relax (hammocks, beds by the pool) and perhaps best of all, the food was probably the best I've had in the Philippines. We'll be back next year for sure.

Very simple rooms but also very stylish. Hammocks and daybeds everywhere - no need to reserve seats!
Short 5 minute walk to the Butanding Tourist Centre and plenty of hotel restaurants and local restaurants along the way if you don't want to eat at the hotel restaurant.
We had a very relaxing stay here, despite our frustration at not seeing the whale sharks the first time we went out.

Room Tip: Room 1 has an additional window looking out directly to the beach complete with window seat. The ro...

I travelled to Donsol in the low season, and was disappointed with Elysia. I made the mistake of booking online (non-refundable), but even so, I left after 1 night of a 4 night stay. I was the only guest in the resort for some of my stay, and did not see a single other person (no staff!) for 24 hours after check in. The restaurant was not open, and the closest restaurant was about an hour away on foot. There were no tricyles in the area, because there were no tourists, so walking was the only option.

I was not comfortable with the level of security (none) at this hotel and the locks on the doors were flimsy and there was no safety latch. Also, in-room amenities were lacking considering the price of the rooms. No shampoo, only a bar of soap. The pool had a vaccum in it, so was not useable. I would not stay here again, even in peak season. I feel like the resort should have closed, or discounted rates, for what they were able to offer people (which was not a lot). Oh, and no bottled water either. I had to walk for an hour to get a bottle.

Elysia Beach Resort was a great base for my 16 year old daughter and I to visit Donsol’s majestic whalesharks. The rooms are very clean and bright, the bed comfortable and the bathroom adequate but fairly small. The staff were really friendly and the service in the restaurant didn’t seem slow to us (for breakfast). We loved the open design of the restaurant too. We were lucky enough to have an end room which looked out over the beach front. The pool area offers plenty of shady places to relax after your boat trip.
Elysia is only a 5-10 minute walk from the tourism office and there’s a small shop virtually across the road for buying water and snacks, although there’s no fridge in the room to keep anything cold.

Went to Donsol and stayed at Elysia for a night. Elysia only has few rooms but we liked it very much. It's not a 5-star resort with lots of amenities but for a night, it's the right place to go. There's not much to see at Donsol except for the whale shark, fireflies at night and shrimp catching. So staying at a neat and cozy resort is a must. The rooms are all in white, including the linens, so it feels and looks so clean. But of course, the rooms are really clean (we occupied two rooms 'cuz we brought along our two teen-age kids). They have to maintain a clean room since every thing is white. We went to Donsol for the whale shark, unfortunately, we weren't able to see one. It's a good thing we were informed ahead by a friend when we arrived Donsol that there were no whale sightings for the past few days. So we decided to wait for the first batch, who went out of the sea at 7am that day, to return at 10am before we booked our whale watching banca tour. True enough, they returned without seeing any whale shark. So, we just decided to take a swim in our hotel's pool before we checked out. On the night we arrived, we booked at the hotel the fireflies watching tour. The receptionist will gladly arrange one for you. It's worth the distance (we have to ride a tricycle and travel for almost 45 mins). The sight is spectacular. Our backdrop is a starry starry sky. Then, we have our dinner at Baracuda Beach Resort, a few distance from Elysia. They serve fresh sea foods that were catch during that day. The service is quite slow though 'cuz the owner personally oversees each meal that are cooked and served. I think. she even personally cooks some of the meal. But, it's really worth the wait. The grilled baracuda fish and tiger prawn were super delicious. The squid salad is the best of its kind. The squid is amazingly tender. They serve a variety of cocktail drinks too. So while waiting, you can enjoy a drink and the squid salad (the salad was served after a short wait only).

It was satisfactory. Basic and clean and I am a stickler for clean. Food was edible and local. Service at restaurant was great. Go and order breakfast first, then get ready ... breakfast will be ready when you get back in 15 minutes. Same with other meals if you have things to do. You will need to bring shampoo. Our shower worked great. At night, they may turn off the water sometimes, as one night we did not have water from maybe 12 to 5 am. AC worked fine. Bed was comphy but a little squeaky, ok. Has own armed guard. BTW, you can not count on seeing the whale sharks even if you go out on multiple three hour tours. If you do see them, plan on having lots of boat and swimmer company. The interaction rules are not being aheared to as of the end of April 2012. The whale sharks seem to have gotten wise to the nonsense and mostly gone elsewhere. Snorkeling at the Penisula was good; saw a species of octopus and other things that I have never seen before elsewhere. It was muck snorkeling.

Room Tip: It is small place so any room is pretty much like any other one. We had the one right across the wa...

The staff is super friendly and helpful. We visited in March because they make it sound like a whale shark encounter is a sure thing. There was only one that day so we didn't see him but we were so glad we at least got to see Donsol. This resort is lacking luxury but it has so much charm. It's beachfront with a big pool and it's a short walk from the whale shark tourism center. The hotels are a bit secluded from the rest of the town but a few of the hotels have open air restaurants with barefoot servers.. including this one. Order the ray that's on the menu! It's a nice relaxing vacation for a couple or a family but once the electricity cuts out there's nothing to do until the generates come on, and even then there's no tv and the water is turned super low.. so have a book or something planned. There's also 24hr security armed with a rifle which is scary but reassuring I suppose. Make sure you bring an adapter for the electrical outlet! And don't expect internet. Get a beer by the pool and watch the bats at night!

Room Tip: All rooms are basic and surround the pool. There's only a few rooms so book early!
