After reading a lot online about the feeding of the Whale Sharks in Oslob, Cebu, we decided that we did not want a zoo type environment and would take the chance with Donsol. So happy we did! The guys who take you out are fantastic and really know what they are doing in terms of spotting the Whale Sharks, positioning the boat correctly and making sure that it is all carried out in an environmentally friendly and safe way. They are also very knowledgable and still, after 15 years, get excited at a sighting! We didn't see any on our first afternoon as it was raining, but the spotters never gave up and the second morning brought us interactions with 2 different whale sharks. It was amazing to see them in their natural environment :)

An amazing price for an amazing experience. The tour takes 3 hours, and in those 3 hours I spent 2 hours in the water swimming alongside these enourmous creatures. Our guide Gerry was a great guy and like us, desperately waiting to jump in the water. Nice to see a man enjoying his job that much. In total we saw 3 Whale Sharks and we saw the same ones come up to the surface a few times. For me it was the best experience I had during my semester in Azia.

First of all I would start by saying that if you did go to Donsol and didn't see a whale shark you could hardly be disappointed as Donsol is such a laid back and charming location to chill out for a few days - the whale sharks are really just the icing on the cake.

Once in Donsol finding the tourism office, your departure point for your encounter, is easy and never more than a trike ride away. There is a restaurant just to the left of tourism office where you can grab some breakfast before you head out for your adventure. Our first trip out in the long boat began at 7am on 3 January 2014 on a fairly overcast morning and did not yield any whale shark interactions, however we still had a relaxing morning out on the water. We did talk to our guide though and he gave us a heads up that it was better to head out a bit later around 9 am as the sun is higher and it's easier to spot the sharks - just like when fishing you have to remember there is a lot of water out there mixed in with these guys.

Day 2 we heeded our guides advice, regrouped our same posse from the day before, and headed out at 9 am with an almost cloud free sky and barely a breath of wind blowing - perfect whale shark conditions. At 10:30 am we were in the water and swimming beside one of the most perfect creatures on earth. Our encounter was only brief, perhaps less than a minute, but there is not person in the water that day who will not remember that experience for the rest of their lives.

The boats all have shelter but you will still get a bit of sun so bring plenty of sun protection, your snorkelling gear, some water, a positive attitude and get ready to have a whale of a time!

We swam with the whale sharks on 26 December 2013. It was a wonderful experience - we saw loads and had a great time. We went in the afternoon and there was only one other boat out, so we had them all to ourselves. They swam straight past me repeatedly - so enormous and unconcerned about me, I was actually scared, even though I know they're not interested in me!

Only downside is that although we didn't really experience it ourselves, we heard from others that sometimes the tour guides break the rules - we heard of multiple boats with one whale shark, people being encouraged to touch and even ride them. However this was not our experience - just secondhand hearsay from other tourists we met.

If you're in the Philippines, you must go! It's indescribable!

Butanding Tourism in Donsol started year 1997, its a slow but good for for the economy of our town Donsol. When i am swimming with these amazing giants, its truly mesmerizing and an unforgettable experience. Probably a lifetime experience that we are going to share with our guests as long as we can keep our most precious resource.
Be guided with the following info when visiting our town.
1. ATM Service is not that reliable.
2. Donsolanos are good in English.
3. Public and private transportation is available anytime.
4. Hotels are good enough to accommodate guests.
5. Honestly speaking, our waters are not that good for swimming especially near the houses in Dancalan.
6. Donsolanos are friendly, but a tourist must respect its uniqueness.
Responsible eco-tourism is a must to keep our Butanding..
Good luck to our guests. The whalesharks are in the wild, we don't have to expect 100% chance to see and swim with it. That makes the chase more exciting.
