Owner description: The Coal Mines Historic Site was Tasmania’s first operational mine, established as a much-needed local source of coal, but also as a place of punishment for the ‘worst class’ of convicts.Along with the nearby Port Arthur Historic Site, the Coal Mines Historic Site is included in the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing.A visit to the Coal Mines is a fascinating and rewarding adjunct to any visit to the Port Arthur Historic Site.

Quiet surroundings without too many tourists. You can drive to the site and park with only a 5 minute walk to the main site. Excellent venue to take a picnic and sit amongst the ruins and look out over the bays.

We have visited Port Arthur many times, but this was the first time to the mines. It is FREE and has amazing ruins with a beautiful beach. Worth the drive on from Port Arthur to check it out.

Fantastic free bit of early australian history. Similar to Port Arthur on a small scale - needs more protection. Great drive around a scenic area and good pit stop. Local little shop stocks some nice bread - so you can have a picnic there.

Underground cells are a must. Have been here many times and never tire of it. Fantastically evocative piece of convict history.

Great site to visit, self guided and the views from the old barracks and solitary c3lls over the bay toward hobart is simply stunning. The place just oozes history!
