A beautiful spot out of the way in the old British hill station. Come here for hiking and then relax at the hotel, took a room upstairs in the older building. Very large and well appointed. Food was fine, but not beat anywhere. People were very nice. Limitied English. Quite memorable.

Our second stop in Myanmar brought us to Kalow, a beautiful and “cool” (in terms of climate) hill station. We stayed at the Amara resort, a lovely old colonial style house on top of the hill and a bit outside of Kalow.

We had two large rooms on the first floor, both very clean and nicely furnished with a good bathroom. There is no TV or Radio (or free Internet), but I think if you are in this kind of place yo don’t really need this.

The hotel had two large dogs, much to the delight of my kids who spend most of the afternoon playing with them and the workers in the beautiful garden.

We had only breakfast at the hotel (which is served, not buffet, but especailly the bread was very good) as one look at the menu and the prices convinced us to eat out (we went to the Orange Food Centre which is about 5 mins walk away towards the village, good food and lovely people who don’t speak English at all…).

As a starting point or “base” for any trekking tours in the area I can highly recommend the Amara Resort.

The hotel has 10 rooms in two charming cottages on the property. Our room was fairly large with a four poster bed, wood burning fireplace and a very nice bathroom. There are no TVs or refrigerators in the rooms, and wi-fi is $5 per day. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful with flowers and a little vegetable garden, which supplies some of the produce for the restaurant. I have no complaints about the hotel or the staff. However, the restaurant definitely left a lot to be desired. The food was pretty mediocre (for both breakfast and dinner), and the price was much higher than it should be. There are a couple of restaurants within a 20 minute walk of the hotel, which will give you more bang for your kyat, plus the bonus of enjoying the cool weather and beautiful scenery of Kalaw.

We only stayed one ought at the Amara Resort but it was a very pleasant stay. The hotel consists of beautiful cottages set in beautiful gardens. The room was spacious and comfortable with antiques and paintings scattered around and in the pleasant lounges in the cottages. Food was pleasant and used fresh vegetables and fruit from the hotels own gardens. The staff were very friendly and welcoming.

We only stayed one night after a long drive from Heho. The journey to Kalow made the journey worthwhile. If trekking I would imagine this hotel would be a good base. The room, in an old colonial house was big with a four poster bed. The bathroom was well appointed. However there was no TV or refrigerator in the room. There is also no air conditioning but this is not a problem as it gets quite cold at night, in fact a thin duvet was needed. This was the only hotel in our tour of Myanmar that charged to use Wi-Fi, $5, it also gave a very bad exchange rate from dollars to kyats. The hotel only has a few rooms but did not seem busy, this meant that eating in the restaurant was a bit 'soulless' but as the hotel is a long way from the centre of town it was really the only option. Breakfast was not buffet style but was reasonable with some choice included.

This was a great change from the normal .A real retreat, superb staff ,superb room ,superb food.the only reason it does not get 5star is I like a drink in the evening and apart from restaurant there is no place to get a drink and no mini bar in room but apart from that i could not fault it

I am very conflicted about our stay at Amara. We were there one night.

Pros:
- absolutely beautiful rooms and grounds
- incredible food at their restaurant (and great ambience)
- wonderful service

Cons:
- we felt nickel and dimed for everything. they grossly overcharged us when booking a trek to inle. We paid way too much per day (compared to every other traveler we met who was doing the EXACT SAME thing) and they even included a bunch of add-ons that were also ridiculously overpriced (delivering our bags at the end of the trek, the boat on inle to our hotel). they also charged $5 for internet that did not work.
- they forgot to charge us for everything so they even called our guide during our trek asking for more money. it was hard to argue over the phone and we felt stuck.
- it was difficult to do anything in kalaw not through amara because they werent that close to the town, which made their prices feel a bit predatory.

overall, we had a good stay but left with a pretty bad taste in our mouth.
