“Midweek Break”
Reviewed May 2, 2013 via mobile

Just returned from an impromptu midweek break at Glenesk and can't fault it in any way. Taking into account the current refurbishments which will only improve the already good standards. Evening meal and breakfast were really lovely (I highly recommend their steaks!!). A great sleep on wonderful crisp linen and a lovely assortment of pillows!!!

Thanks to all for making it a good experience ;-)

Ellena

PS - where can I buy some pillows like yours??? LOL !!

Ellena,

your kind words and review is much appreciated.
At Glenesk Hotel we are doing our utmost to meet every need for our much valued guests and even more so during our refurbishment period.
We are using local suppliers and being in the county of Angus, I am delighted to read that the bespoke quality meat has met your expectations.
We have just relaunched our new leisure facility after a complete refurbishment and I am looking forward to welcoming you back at the Glenesk again weather it is for a coffee and homemade cake or to join us for an evening of leisure and rounded off with good wine and Aberdeen Angus steak.
Thank you very much again.
Kind regards,

As previous reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is undergoing refurbishment. What is very apparent is the new owners emphasis on the things that are really important-staff could not have been more helpful,or welcoming. The hotel is spotless.Food, both evening meal & breakfast, were excellent & good value, with a real local Scottish flavour-haggis,venison,tattie scones!!The hotel was warm with fresh flowers & candles on the tables,& obvious attention to detail-lots of morning newspapers, magazines to read, tourist information etc.Our bathroom would have benefited from refurbishment, but having said that the shower etc was perfectly adequate,Nice hospitality tray including shortbread,& hot chocolate.Good quality soap, shower gel etc.Dining room & sitting room very pleasant.Small swimming pool & gym-didn't use but looked nice.Very minor quibbles-marmalade was poor quality,as was bread.Otherwise,it was apparent a real effort is being made here-Good Luck

Dear guest,

thank you very much for your kind words and review.
At Glenesk we are trying our utmost to ensure guest satisfaction and comments, constructive and positive are always taken on-board.
I have, since reading your valid observation regarding our preserves, closed off the stock line of the previous brand line and changed over to well known brand in quality packaging in order to reflect our standard and aim at Glenesk Hotel.
I am delighted to read that you have noticed and appreciated small aspects and attention to detail, despite the extensive renovations at the Hotel. Or leisure facility is completely refurbished and re-opened shortly after the weekend of your stay. I did appreciate the understanding and admirable way that guests at the hotel accepted the closing period during refurbishment.
I am looking forward to welcoming you back at the Glenesk Hotel for coffee and homemade cake or an evening of leisure with good wine and high quality cuisine.
Thank you very much again for your much valued input and observation.
Kind regards,
Marcell Cilliers

I stopped here en route to aberdeen since it was so expensive to stay there centrally

Dear guest,

thank you for your much valued review and observation.

We are in the middle of extensive renovations at Glenesk Hotel. We pride our-selfs in offering exceptional service to each guest . The new refurbished leisure facility re-opened a few weeks ago and we are proud to offer high standard equipment in our gym and leisure department.

Regarding your mentioning about room rates. We do our room rate calculation in relation with similar establishments in the area. Standard B&B in a nearby guesthouse is £32.50 per guest per night and our room rate is calculated with our leisure facility, gym and quality of cuisine and rooms in mind. In my humble opinion I do find our room rate justifiable and very seldom an issue raised by guests.

I am looking forward to welcoming you back at the Glenesk Hotel and trust that you will be able to appreciate the new "face-lifted" hotel. I trust that all the small aspects and attention to detail will be to your satisfaction.

Kind regards,
Marcell Cilliers

I haven't stayed at the Glenesk for a number of years as the previous management left a lot to be desired. Having seen the positive reports about the new team we decided to give it a try. The description of work in progress is very accurate. The initial room I was offered, room 12, was very tired and in need of a refurb, however it was spotlessly clean. I asked if they had anything better, not as a complaint, and the response of the management was excellent, They juggled around with rooms, took me to see the options and I eventually settled on room 8 which was pleasantly fitted out. The only negative was the mattress was was either old or cheap and not very comfortable.

The staff including the new owner could not have been more pleasant or accommodating. They have an enormous task as the place has been very neglected for a long time but they have the first essential ingredient of customer service and have already created a pleasant atmosphere, hopefully they can get the refurbishment completed this year.

I stay regularly in this area whilst fishing and there are a number of OK small hotels but none that you look forward to going back to. I've booked in again at the Glenesk and am looking forward to it. This area needs a good quality reasonably priced hotel and all the signs are this is going to be it.

Dear Guest, After reading your review very carefully I would like to thank you for your thoughts. We are very glad you gave us a try and respect your views on our establishment. The business model we are following is not very popular with some but we are sticking to it because we can see from the sensible people’s feedback and reviews that we are going in the right direction. We highly appreciate our guest’s constructive comments, and yes, as you mentioned, in some rooms mattresses and beds have not been replaced yet. However, this has been scheduled in our refurbishment programme which is in progress. Once again thank you for your comments from everyone here at the Glenesk, it was an absolute pleasure to have you as our guest. We hope the next time we can live up to your expectations and we look forward to seeing you later in the year.

The hotel was very nice. Staff absolutely friendly. The bedrooms were very clean. We enjoyed a great dinner in the evening and were served perfectly. The breakfast was very good and nicely organised. Edzell itself is a small but wonderfull village to visit.

The staff were friendly. Relaxed atmosphere. Nice building in general. Good 'pub' food made with local fresh produce. Received a free welcome drink at the bar. Good choice of ales and single malt whiskies.

The hotel room was a bit tired looking, and could have been cleaner (cobwebs & dust) but they are undergoing some renovation work which may take in the rooms at some point (Alex Polizzi may have had a few things to say about the decor) We did like the restaurant as it was bright and spacious, even while retaining a traditional look and feel - it shows it can be done. Exposed wires on hairdryer (hadn't been wired in, so safe). Poor shower. Breakfast 'buffet' - packets of bread just left out in their wrapper - not a good look. Instant coffee rather than a pot of filter. (Had to ask for a filter coffee with my breakfast, rather than being offered). All hotels should have a small waste receptacle on the table at breakfast for used teabags, butter wrappers, condiment sachets etc - de-facto standard in Europe... Saves the table getting further cluttered. All relatively minor issues.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review, you are quite right about a number of issues. We have just started, so hopefully when you come back you will see a huge difference. Many renovations are happening and we are pleased to announce the arrival of our new Hotel Manager, the completion of the whole leisure centre reconstruction and central heating installation, every bathroom in the hotel is being renewed as well. One thing I must mention even though you have not. I personally upgraded you to a four poster room and under no circumstances would I have put anyone in a room with an unsafe hairdryer, the previous guest obviously pulled it too hard, dislodged the wires and hidden it back into the holder, however from this experience now this is on our house-keeping list to check daily. Once again thank you for choosing the Glenesk and we hope to see you back very soon.

Checked in this week for a couple of nights for a family occasion. Room, albeit a bit tired in places was immaculately clean, front facing with view looking into the snow capped hills, four poster bed that was large and extremely comfortable, warm and cosy room, lovey hot showers, slept like a dream and greatly appreciated after a very long flight. Customer service really good and helpful - went out for a walk, they arranged lunch for me upon arrival, kept my luggage safe at checkout, friendly all the time. Breakfast was reasonable - lovely yogurts, although the cooked breakfast arrived maybe a bit too quickly for it to be cooked fresh, a few tables used and not cleaned and re-set for next guest, but a minor detail. Evening meals are good, hole some and fresh with local produce. We were allowed to use the dining room all to ourselves one night which was lovely. The hotel is going through a refurb and prospective guests need to bear this in mind. Plenty of things most of us are used to having in top end hotels that we often never use like mini bars etc - a safe would be nice, but reading other reviews, they are upgrading. Wish the owners well in their journey ahead with the hotel and they have a lot of potential to make this grand village country hotel something special. Thanks for a lovely, cosy and welcoming stay nonetheless - greatly appreciated.

Dear Guest, What a lovely review, we all thank you for your comments, we feel as though we have done our job correctly if you enjoyed the welcome, the food and the sleep. I can assure you breakfast is cooked to order on the morning of your request, chef might have been one step ahead cooking off ready bacon & sausages then people are not waiting for the traditional items, but be assured it is cooked fresh for when you place your order. Yes, all the updating is now ongoing and we are pleased to announce the arrival of our new Hotel Manager and the completion of the whole leisure suite with new swimming pool and gym. Bathrooms throughout the Hotel as well as the public toilets are being brought into 21st century, not to mention the Glenesk in its 130-year history getting central heating in every room. Once again from myself and my team the pleasure was ours and we hope to welcome you and your lovely family back very soon.
