Melchsee Frutt is a skiing and hiking destination near Kern, Switzerland and was recommended by our hosts at Villa Wilen. This was a magical place with everywhere you look is a postcard you could sent home. Meadows brimming with wild flowers and trails in every direction. Vistas of the Alps with glacier filled lakes available for photographic enthusiasts. And hiking for all types like seniors, families with young or older children or anyone wanting to enjoy nature. You can also bike and take your bike up on the gondola. The drive up there is also amazing with quaint farms and sound of cow bells ringing around every corner. This place fulfilled my dream of hiking I meadows filled with vistas, flowers and serenity. You won't be disappointed.

8km sled run! 18F to rent a sled, about 60F to get the lift pass. Early in the morning is better to go - less crowded and the sled run doesn't have as many moguls. Lots of families. Gorgeous views! There is rosti and gluhwein to warm you up for lunch. It's not inexpensive, but well worth the money.

Melchsee-Frutt was our first day trip on a 3-week visit. We learned how the transportation system works in Switzerland and how wonderfully organized! To get there take a train to Sarnen, the post bus to Stockalp, finally a gondola to Melchee-Frutt. Look for the yellow trail signs - they not only point the direction of the trails, but also estimate the time to the destination. The choice of hikes is amazing, ranges from 20 minutes to full day.

Our introduction also taught us that restaurants, small groceries, public wc's, and public water for refilling water bottles are plentiful. It is so easy to hike and so easy to find your way in Switzerland!

All this and beautiful views!

We also purchased our first alpcase, cheese made high in the Alps during the summer.

If you take the same route home, be aware that the bus leaves Stockalp once an hour. We missed the bus by 5 minutes, but no problem! There is a restaurant just up the hill from the bus stop where we enjoyed a beer and the view while waiting for the next bus.

We went sledging here twice this past winter. A very long run with good speed and felt very safe along the edges. They had the dangerous areas banked with snow and walls. We have sledged on a number of mountains and this is by far our favorite one. Fastest time we made it down was 41 minutes.

Melchsee-Frutt offers a unique panorama in the middle of the Swiss Mountains. Very near from Lucerne. Nice to go skiing, to walk (all year-round). However, there could be more restaurants, shops etc.
