“(Almost) our own, private Tuscan wine estate!”
Reviewed April 20, 2012

We stayed for 3 nights at this stunning property, set on a beautiful, organic wine farm in southern Tuscany.

The team are keen to do everything they can to make your stay relaxing - and they succeeded completely. With only 5 rooms this property made us feel very, very special. We'd splashed out on Room 1 - the largest suite with 270 degree views, a log fire and a bathroom larger than many hotel rooms! We ate on the estate each night, and enjoyed amazing traditional Tuscan food and wine from the cellar.

The highlight of the stay for us was almost 3 hours spent on a 'wine journey' with Elizabetha - from the vines, to the cantena, to the process of making the wines, we LOVED this experience. We've done many wine tours all over the world, but this is by far the best we've experienced. (And some fantastic stories of Tuscany thrown in for good measure).

We'll certainly be back - and hope that next time its a hot, summer weekend when we can simply lie by the pool.

Room Tip: Splash out on Room 1

We had 5 nights at this beautiful house and loved every minute of it. The staff provided excellent service-they were attentive and always on hand, without disturbing us. The setting is stunning and we were able to spend hours on end simply looking out over the surrounding vineyards. The wine tasting afternoon was really interesting and we got to taste some gorgeous wine. It was run by the owner and his head wine expert and is something that we will always remember. Meeting the owner was interesting and he was charming with amazing stories-it made our stay even more special. The food was good and freshly made but perhaps a little over priced- some nights we drove to some local restaurants as recommended by Polly and Bradley at the house.
Overall this is a beautiful place to stay with a great setting and superb staff and one we cannot recommend highly enough.

We stayed for 2 nights and had the most incredible time. The property is beautiful, on the top of a hill with amazing views looking down on the vineyards. We stayed in room 5, which was very peaceful looking out to the side of the house, with our own little terrace and table. The pool area is lovely with great views, we really enjoyed lazing around.

At night they set the tables up wherever you like outside, and they are really spaced out so you feel like you are having your own little private meal. The food is great, we loved the fresh pasta.

Above all, it is just quiet, peaceful and luxourious. We were only there for a couple of nights but went back feeling like we had been away for months. I very rarely want to go back to places because I always like to try new things, but this is one of the few places I have been to that I can't wait to return. Only very minor complaint was the breakfasts - I think for these prices they should include a cooked option (although the continental spread was decent).

We booked Conti di San Bonifacio wine resort for our wedding weekend in August for three days. We had a truly wonderful stay in this idyllic, luxurious retreat which proved a perfect location to celebrate our wedding with our family. We would highly recommend the venue for anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion – particularly if you book out the full hotel. It is hard for us to list all of the positives (we’ll try), however, we really couldn’t fault anything during our stay and came away rating the experience as 10 out of 10.

The owner, Manfredo, and his team are extremely welcoming, polite and provide attentive service without being obtrusive. We wanted to create the feel of staying in a villa rather than a hotel and Manfredo was extremely accommodating to ensure that this was achieved. The entire team really couldn’t do enough for us and our guests. They have truly mastered the art of being available at exactly the moment you need them but then blend into the background when you require intimacy – this was particularly important for us given that we were celebrating our wedding.

We had three days at Conti di San Bonifacio – the first being a wonderful barbeque (which merits further description– think sitting outside in total tranquillity whilst the sun sets, eating succulent prawns, local steaks, a variety of salads and pastas, followed by a divine tiramisu), the second day being our wedding ceremony which we chose to have in a small chapel near Montalcino (Manfredo recommended a wedding planner who is an English national based in Tuscany to help with arranging our ceremony and selecting a gorgeous venue – she was a god sent, proved invaluable and liaised regularly with Manfredo) and we followed this by having a magical reception dinner back at Conti di San Bonifacio. Expecting a few sore heads, we left the plans for our final day flexible.

The bedrooms are extremely comfortable, with rustic, yet chic, furnishings and the 360 degree views from the hotel are stunning and offer a differing ambience depending on the time of day - whether its taking pre-dinner drinks whilst watching the sun set over the sprawling vineyards at the front of the building, enjoying the daytime sun by the pool or enjoying breakfast overlooking the countryside at the back of the resort. The living spaces at Conti di San Bonifacio have a real convivial feel and we enjoyed being able to retire to the luxury of the lounge area late at night with its large, relaxing sofas and its honesty bar – we have some very special memories of laughing and joking late into the night and the staff remained on hand for as long as we needed them. On our final day we offered our guests the opportunity to have a day trip to experience some of the sights of Tuscany but the delights of Conti di San Bonifacio had cast a spell over them by this point and there was a unanimous decision that we should spend our final day luxuriating at the hotel.

The food was varied and very (very) enjoyable! The head chef is skilled in making even the simplest of dishes extremely tasty (I wish I could make such exquisite pasta dishes!) and brings local specialities to the menu such as her family recipe wild boar stew, which went down a storm with our guests. The wine produced at the resort is of very good quality and adds to the experience. Manfredo also organised a wine tasting for us on our final evening which provided an added, and very enjoyable, dimension.

We hold many special memories from our three days at Conti di San Bonifacio and everyone agreed that it’s a real gem – Manfredo and his team had clearly put considerable effort and planning into ensuring everything ran like clockwork. Its extremely gratifying to hear so many superlatives from our guests – “amazing”, “speechless” “wonderful” “perfect”– and this still hasn’t stopped!

We only had 14 people in total for our wedding. Eight of us stayed in the five rooms at Conti di San Bonifacio and another six guests stayed at Tenuta Casteani which is a very short drive away (approx 5 minutes) and is also within walking distance. Our guests were also extremely complementary about the quality of the accommodation and helpfulness of the staff at this hotel.

For our honeymoon we moved on to a number of other places around Tuscany but the bar had been set extremely high and no where came close in any department to Conti di San Bonifacio.

We found the resort through Mr and Mrs Smith and were looking forward to four days of rest and relaxation. We were a little worried about having to mix with the other couples, as much as we enjoy the company of other people, we really wanted to spend some time to ourselves...and the intimacy of the resort may have forced us to mix and mingle - we need not have worried, but more of that later...
Having stayed for two nights in another hotel just south of Florence, we set off to find Conti di San Bonifacio, armed with the Lat and Long co-ordinates (as recommended by another tripadvisor reviewer). Directions by satnav were perfect, taking us to the gates of the estate.
We pressed the intercom button on the gates and a voice welcomed us, telling us to come up to the hotel. The gates opened and off we set up the drive. As we pulled up to the front door, Count Manfredo welcomed us with a smile, told us to leave the car where it was and not to worry about the luggage. He showed us around his beautiful villa with an obvious (and well-founded) pride and then took us to our room. Just as we arrived at the room the luggage arrived and our car had been perfectly parked in the car park.
After unpacking, it was up to the terrace for prosecco and nibbles overlooking the glorious countryside and the vineyard. What a start.
The villa is so well arranged that we hardly saw any of the other guests when we were round the pool - could be that most people went exploring the countryside (Elba, Sienna, Strada di Vini etc) whilst our exploring consisted of room, pool and villa !!
Our fears of everyone being on top of each other was totally and utterly unfounded. At dinner, table are scattered around the grounds outside providing peace, tranquility and intimacy - perfect.
Having said that, we met some wonderful people with everyone choosing to meet for drinks before dinner and sharing the experiences of the day.
Count Manfredo has a jewel of a resort, beautifully decorated by his wife Sarah. He provides the perfect antidote to the stresses of daily life and also provides some of the best Tuscan wines (at very, very reasonable prices) that I have tasted over numerous trips to this part of the world. He also has a team that enhance the experience even more, always available and providing food of the highest order.
As we left, we promised Count Manfredo and ourselves that we will definitely return...maybe next week ??

Room Tip: Push the boat out and get room No. 1, although all rooms are fabulous...

We had an amazing 6 days at Conti Di San Bonifacio. The 360 degree view is stunning, the food/wine is authentic and delicious, the hotel from the outside is rustic and charming with a stylish and chic interior. The staff are attentive yet not intrusive and nothing was too much trouble. We had planned to do several day trips around the region but sitting by the pool and looking at the view was far too tempting. We would also seriously recommend the the wine tasting, as it is so much more than a conventional wine tasting. The whole experience was first class, we'll be back.

Although it is not easy to find - you need to put the long and lat into the Satnav - once you arrive at this beautiful wine resort perched on top of the hill and are warmly greeted by the charming Count Manfredo himself, who shows you to your light, large and very comfortable bedroom with windows on three sides and stunning views over the vineyards to the hills beyond, you realise it can't get much better than this! The whole house has been decorated in muted, light, plain colours and the furniture is a mix of modern and old - some of the wooden furniture bought from local farmhouses and stripped or painted and some bought from Portobello Road in London - not the usual gaudy colours of many interiors of Italian houses. The Countess Sarah, also charming, is English and told us that along with her husband they did much of the restoration themselves and not wanting to detract from the stunning views chose the muted palettes which blend so well with the open plan format downstairs. Just outside is a sparkling swimming pool, which looks so inviting, although a little cold in April.

Nothing was too much trouble for our hosts and if you did not want to eat the four course dinner - which, incidentally, was my only gripe, as they charged 45 euros per head for a three course rather basic meal (pudding, wine, water etc. was extra) - the Countess would knock up one of her specialities, The Countess's Club sandwich, which was delicious. The breakfasts, outside if it was warm enough, were good and varied, although again there was a charge for cooked orders. Their wine, of course, was extremely good. So much care is put into its production, as one can see and taste if you take up Manfredo's offer of a wine tasting trip (30 euros) and hear him talk passionately about the wine he produces.

One thing to mention is that it isn't in the heart of Tuscany and there are not many good restaurants nearby and not a great deal to do in the area apart from visiting a few hill top villages, but if you want to get away from it all, be treated like Royalty and just enjoy the surroundings and stunning views - and of course their delicious wine - then this is the place for you.

Room Tip: Room 1 with stunning views and lots of space.
