“Lovely location”
Reviewed April 16, 2014

Although the room facilities here aren't by any means luxurious, they are perfectly adequate, and if you are lucky enough to get a first floor riverfront villa the views from either terrace or from your bed of the Mekong are amazing, as too were the sunrises, so really no complaints. The rice paddy setting was a nice touch, and we had an amazing massage in their spa whilst there, at a very reasonable cost.

It was also lovely to catch a small boat each morning from the small jetty below the hotel, crossing the Mekong to meet our driver and guide for our planned excursions.

We were on a half board basis which is essential, but it was disappointing that the table d'hote menu didn't change throughout our stay, although we were given an allowance towards the a la carte menu.

Room Tip: Make sure you book a Riverfront Villa, and ideally one on the1st floor

Dear Guests,

Thank you for your very kind review of your recent stay at our Resort. We are very pleased that you found your accommodations "perfectly adequate," though not luxurious (our style is actually intended to be "stylish and casually elegant," not luxurious!); views of the Mekong's rivertine life, Mekong sunrises and also your massage in our Spa all "amazing"; and also a "lovely" experience as our Riverboat carried you ever morning from our jetty across the River to your waiting car and driver!

As you mentioned in your review that your table d'hote half board menu didn't change day to day, as you had hoped, we have now added a second table d'hote menu for those guests who have arranged and paid in advance with their travel operators for such a menu, as you did. Of course, as you said, we offered you an allowance on our la carte menu instead, so we hope you were well satisfied on this occasion!

Kindest regards, David (Managing Director), for The River Resort

When we stayed the resort, telephone and television system was out of order due to thunder storm a few days prior. We spent three days here without any disturbance from daily life.
This is very unusual setting. All the facilities are modern. Foods are served as if we were in Tokyo or Bangkok. But, the view of the Mekong, and trees and rice paddy in the resort are purely local, particularly gardeners who take care rice paddy. Good place for mental healing.

Dear Visitors from Tokyo,
Thank you very much for your recent review of your 3 day stay at The River Resort. Regrettably, we don't yet have many Japanese visitors, so it is a special honor to hear that you enjoyed your stay despite the fact that our guest room phones and TVs were in the midst of repair from damage during a thunderstorm several days before your arrival; that you found our cuisine up to Tokyo and Bangkok standards; the River view satisfying, also enjoying the trees and rice paddy tended in local style by our Lao gardeners . . . as you concluded, our Resort is a "good place for mental healing"!
We hope to see you again sometime soon! Moo ichido irrasite kudasai!

We stayed at the resort for a total of 5 days in the upper level room facing the Mekong. The view was amazing and we could watch the sunrise every morning and all the boats go by. The resort grounds were well maintained on a daily basis and rooms were always cleaned. The best part about our stay were the friendly and professional staff. They made the experience extremely enjoyable and catered to all our needs, no matter how bizarre they were. We had some gecko's sneak into our room, the staff immediately assisted us to ensure that they were taken care of without harming the reptiles. The food in the restaurant was tasty. Every dish i tried was wonderful! Especially the traditional Lao dishes. Compliments to the chef! We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely come back again!

Dear Recent Guests,
Thank you ever so much for your lovely review of your 5 day stay earlier this month at our Resort! That you found the views from your RiverFront room "amazing," the grounds well maintained and your room always clean are very pleasing for all of us at the Resort to know, and especially your comment that the best part of your stay was our friendly and professional staff. That comment will warm their hearts and encourage them to continue to improve! We are also very much pleased that you found our food tasty, or as you said, "every dish I tried was wonderful," especially the traditional Lao dishes!
Please do come again on your next visit to Lao, and we hope you will have an equally satisfying experience!

We stayed at The River Resort for three nights and thought it was a great resort.

Lovely, friendly service, the pool is gorgeous with great views, and the rooms are beautifully appointed. The grounds are beautiful, and although we didn't try it, there was an option to have a massage too (we were already relaxed enough already after lounging by the pool!).

The only thing which could be improved upon was the food, which was good, but not excellent like everything else about this place.

Dear Guest, Thank you for reviewing your 3 night stay last month at The River Resort on TripAdvisor. We are pleased that you and your traveling companion very much enjoyed our "Lovely Hideaway" (as you called it), our friendly service, your room and the furnishings, our beautiful parkland, and lounging at the infinity pool with its great riverine views.

We also welcome your comment that the only thing that could be improved upon at our Resort is the food, which was "good, but not excellent like everything else about this place." In that regard I am pleased to tell you that we have at the Resort this month as visiting Chef a talented young gentleman from Seattle, Washington, who is Executive Chef at a prominent restaurant and also teaches at a culinary institute there. He has come to advise our Thai Chef and his team of 3 young Laotian cooks on enhancements to our western cuisine and on the range of our menu offerings. If you can come again next year, we very much hope you will be able to conclude then that our cuisine has become "excellent"!

With kind regards, David (for the Resort and our staff)

We stayed a total of 3 nights in a Mekong facing upper level room...AMAZING! The views were spectacular...sitting out on your balcony watching the sun rise, then switching to your back balcony to watch it set. All the views! Great indoor and outdoor shower..big spacious, clean and well appointed rooms. It was low season so if we saw 2 other guests it was a rareity. The spa was relaxing and much needed. Limited selection of treatments...but they had what was necessary. You can dine by the infinity pool over looking the mekong, in the open air restaurant or on the grounds over looking the mekong. Breakfast was fabulous...not a buffet but a choice of what you wanted. Lunch and dinner both had a great selection of western and asian dishes. We also did the sunset Mekong cruise on a pontoon boat....beautiful sunset, canapes and a bucket of beer lao...you couldn't ask for anything more! The staff were all outstanding!

Room Tip: Get a river facing room on top floor! Room 401 and 501 have best views

Dear Guests, We thank you very much for your review and are pleased that you found your 3 nights at our Resort so much to your liking or, as you called it, "a slice of heaven": sunrise over the Mekong River from your front terrace, and sunset from your rear terrace; your outdoor and indoor showers and clean and spacious room; a choice of several attractive settings for your meals, including our open-air dining room, alfresco on our Riverside lawns, and on the deck of our infinity pool; the variety of Western and Asian cuisine we offer; our relaxing Spa; your sunset cruise on the Mekong in our Riverboat; and the quality of our staff, who very much appreciate your kind words and of whom we are very proud . . . many of them children of our neighboring rice farmers with limited educations but a strong desire to learn skills that are key to success in the modern world that Laos is joining! With best wishes and hoping to see you again at The River Resort, David

We drove up from 4000 Islands and spent 4 nights at this beautiful new hotel, primarily to see Wat Phou, but also used it as a base to get the the plateau, coffeee and tea plantations and various waterfalls. Spent some time in Champasak as well, but also spent some time soaking up the relaxing atmosphere in the pool, spa and the very nice modern room with a great view direct over the river.
Meals served at the restaurant were very good, perhaps a little expensive, and the local food was excellent. They had a chef from Seattle seconded for 6 weeks to add to the Western menu. The Mekong fish meals were among the best fresh water fish meals I have eaten. Beer Lao is a great beer on a hot evening. Mr Kea, who looked after us for much of our time at the hotel, including the restaurant and the river cruise, was constantly smiling and looking for additional ways to make sure we were comfortable without being overbearing. All the staff were wonderful. It is a trait of the Lao people.
Rooms were very comfortable, directly on the river form the room deck where we could see the local fishermen pulling in their catch each morning with the sunrise directly behind them.
Comfortable king beds, with crisp, clean white linen, comfy robes, modern cooling tiled floors and walls, minimalist furnishing, full length deck with glass full view walls from the room, inside and outside showers.
Small library for those in need of a book to read in the evening, fully equipped spa and massage rooms (very good value), and reception desk to organize bikes to ride to town, Tuk Tuk for Wat Phou or cars and drivers to go on longer trips.
Entry from 4000 Islands is by boat up the river from Ban Muang (half hour) or direct from Pakse (45 minutes)
All in all a very relaxing way to finish our trip to Laos in comfort and style

Room Tip: Get an upstairs room with river view if possible
