Good rooms, splendid views on Mekong River and Laos

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Dec 5, 2012
The rooms are basic and clean. Most rooms have splendid views on the river. Also the restaurant looks out towards the Mekong River and Laos on the other side. The restaurant offers Thai & Western dishes. A good hotel & restaurant as base to start your Laos trip the next day. Staff is friendly and helpfull. Only one thing was strange, the rooms has a free water cooker for tea or coffee, but the hotel charges 30 baht to use the coffee or tea bags (should be free). In the evenings they have live music in the restaurant, which plays to loud and only boring (old) Western music.

One of several generic resort hotels in the town, the Namkhong provides perfectly adequate accommodation, but lacks any real character. The rooms are clean, the staff are polite and the views of the river are beautiful, other than these qualities, there is very little else to recommend the place. Having lived and worked in Thailand, I have travelled extensively and can honestly say that the Namkhong has the worst breakfast I have ever come across. The food was unedible. Butter that smelt and tasted like bad cheese, chemically infused orange juice and jam that glowed faint neon, that had clearly never seen a piece of fruit in its life. The Thai food was equally as bad, with rice soup offerings being left untouched by all at the breakfast table.

Lastly, it's worth noting that logistical management of the hotel relies on all staff carrying and using loud radios at all hours of the day and night. Loud radio babble at 5am, 6am, 7am and then a horrific breakfast has certainly ensured that neither I nor my friends will return in a hurry.

Stayed here one night in a garden room for 1000 baht a night (inc breakfast). Great value for money as the "garden view" was actually a great view of the Mekong from the balcony. Room was clean and had aircon. The restaurant was pretty cheap and the food good. The hotel seemed a little quiet when we were there but the staff were always on hand to help.

We stayed 1 night here as walk ins and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and value. The rooms were medium sized and had a furnished balcony with wonderful views across the Mekong to Laos. Dinner in the restaurant was tremendous value with very good food and generous portions. The added bonus was live entertainment, good cocktails and cheap beer. If we travel this way again we would stay for a couple of days. Moving on to Chiang Mai was simple as the hotel has shared vans departing at 10.30 am daily from the hotel.

Room tip: Any river facing room should be OK. Reception level rooms are the most convenient.
